LCDs comprise a thin glass sandwich of
two polarization filters crossed at 90
degrees, and a liquid chemical filling that
can vary the polarization of the light
proportional to a signal voltage.
This ability to vary the light transmission
through the device is used to modulate the
brightness. LCDs are light valves.

Motion image resolution is very a important factor
in the display of fast-moving scenes.

Fast-moving action results in blurry images.
Crisp, clear display of fast-moving action.
LCD screens turn yellowish due to the effects of UV and heat
on the LCD panel parts.

LCDs claim dramatic power
savings compared to plasma
LCD ratings are based on actual

When APL is below approx. 30%
plasma uses less power than
LCD
Most TV images are below 20% APL!
Panel Strength
The front glass plate resists scratches to offer
excellent durability. As a result, a plasma
display panel is about 10 times stronger than
an LCD.
Even when used in public facilities and stores
where people gather, which increases the
possibility of contact with the front of the
panel, the glass plate protects the panel from
scratches and other damage.
LCD LCD Plasma Plasma
There is no front glass plate for protection, so
the panel surface is easily scratched. When
used as a touch panel for an information
system, a front glass plate must be installed,
which results in an additional cost.
Our plasma panel modules do not contain the six hazardous substances specified by the RoHS Directive.
The backlight of the LCD contains mercury (which is exempt from the RoHS Directive).

Plasma is emissive
You are looking directly at the source of colored light
Viewing angle is always wide in both H and V planes
Black levels can be very low
Contrast is high
Color saturation dependent on phosphor formulations
Red, blue intense enough to match SMPTE-C, BT.709, DCI
points
Green formulations cover SMPTE-C, BT.709, most of DCI
Plasmas use AGC circuitry for reducing power consumption
AGC effect evident when taking a full white screen brightness
reading
Example:
Small area (SA) reading is 100 nits (29 ft-L)
Full white (FW) reading is 65 nits (19 ft-L)
This does not affect dynamic range with normal video content
This is very similar behavior to CRTs
LCD is transmissive
You are looking at light after it passes through multiple glass
surfaces (problems with scattering, refraction)
Viewing angle is narrow in both H and V planes
Black levels impacted due to refraction and scattering (CCFL
backlight is always on, while LEDs can be pulsed)
Color saturation dependent on filter formulations or LEDs
Red, blue can usually match SMPTE-C, BT.709, DCI points
Green often undersaturated
LCD backlights come in two types
Cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs)
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
CCFLs are the most common type of backlight and are similar to
standard fluorescent lamps
Actual use life closer to 15,000 hours*
Aging process creates color shift, requiring recalibration
Pro LCD monitors now moving to LED backlights
More costly solution
RGB clusters provide better white than single white LED
Local area dimming usually used for deep black levels
Has the same viewing angle issues
