Basically that move was valid because it was consistent with the stand of OG. Although not an entirely new point, it is better developed and analyzed in such a way that it give a fresh dimension and pushes the debate forward

Can I give a new stand or propose something different? i.e. Opening supports death penalty. I want to support life imprisonment Basically the GOLDEN RULE is that you MUST support you opening team. If they( opening) gives a valid reasonable model and is accepted, you cannot give a new one.

However as a closing team, you may choose the debate on a more general/principle ground.

Opening supports Death Penalty because it is financially feasible and the practicalities of it. The closing can opt to talk about the principle of why death penalty is good. (Serves as a deterrent perhaps?)
