The Volvo Safety Centre

Establishment of Volvo Safety Centre at Gothenburg with 50 mn pounds. Worlds most advanced safety testing centre. Tests at VSC: Computer simulation Component testing Crash simulations

Computer Simulation
Testing of new car designs through computer simulation. Impact of design on safety. Use of NEC-SX-4 supercomputer Inexpensive as compared to real crash tests.

Repetition of the same crash on the same car.

Component Testing
Study the impact on the human body. Testing the safety of components rather than entire vehicle. Use of FMH rig, Fall rig, DIT rig, drop test rig. Study of the side impact collision.

Accurate data and time saving.

Crash Simulations
Last stage at Volvo Safety centre. Comprehensive test on the entire vehicle. All kinds of possible collisions were done. High speed crashes at various angles. VSC had two long tracks 154m and 108m resp. Use of Air cushion technology. Center consist of
30 high speed film Video cameras 32 daylight photo lamps

Comparison of the simulated test data with actual collision data.
