Pomadasys Magranthans
• Is a common bony fish found in coastal
waters in or near reefs or on soft
substrates; they are found in sub-tropical
and tropical waters.
• The skin of this fish is divided into two
layers.
– The epidermis which is the outer layer.
– And the dermis which is the inner layer.
External anatomy
• The fish has a bilateral symmetry.

• The external body features of this fish are

divided into two regions, the head region
and the trunk region
Dissection
• The first step we took when performing the
dissection is to remove the scales so you
are left with bare skin, which is softer. We
cut the unbroken lateral line that extends
from the anterior or rostral region to the
caudal fin.
Dissection cont.
• The second step is to perform cuts in the
head region
• We cut downward between the nostrils to
the base of the eye.
• The second cut is a straight line parallel to
the Preopercle all the way to the jaw
Systems of the internal anatomy
• There are 6 systems within the
Pomadasys magranthans
• Circulatory- Takes blood throughout the
body.
– The organs used by this system are the heart,
gills, lamella, the latter is the gas exchange
site.
Systems cont.
• Respiratory- is the system were the gas
exchange occurs and oxygen is
introduced into the blood.
– The fish’s respiratory system works like this:
• Water is taken through the fish’s mouth
• The water passes through the gill fillaments where
oxygen is taken from the water.
• As blood pases through these gill fillaments it
absorbs the oxygen taken from the water.
Systems cont.
• Digestive system- This system breaks
down food.
– The food that the fish eats is further digested
in a sack like organ called the pyloric caeca.
Systems cont.
• Excretory system- Excretory system
controls the production of waste products
– In the perch fish ammonia is the mayor waste
products; it is derived from amino acids and
proteins broken down inside the perch.
Systems cont.
• Nervous system- The Central Nervous
system is mainly, almost completely found
in the brain and is in charge of controling
bodily functions as well as sensors
throughout the body
– Fish have especially developed sensors like
the lateral line which allow it to “hear” sound
vibrations in the water.
Systems cont.
• Reproductive system- This system is in
charge of reproduction.
– Males reproductive system- testes
– Female reproductive system- ovaries.
