G040 Unit 1 Session 1

Identify

Know the aims and objectives of this unit Understand what you are expected to do during this unit Understand how you are expected to work when producing all of your A-Level ICT work

Understand the characteristics and significance of different types of information; Understand the different methods for communicating information and the technologies that support them; Create original communications in styles that suit the users; Improve the accuracy, readability and presentational quality of communications you create; Understand some of the ways organisations present information and why they use standard layouts for documents; Choose and apply standard layouts; Understand the need for standard ways of working;

Identify

This unit provides the basis for all the other units: It is all about looking at ICT as a communication tool and investigating ways businesses use IT to communicate for a number of different purposes.

It is assessed by building a portfolio of work whilst completing a assignment based upon a your fictional company.
This unit is assessed by coursework only and there is no exam remember each unit is worth 1/6 of you final mark. It will be completed by February 2012 and you will receive a mark out of 50. Grade boundaries are currently not known for any of the units although will be round about 24 for an E and 44 for an A.

Identify

A report comparing two types of business document from each of three organisations; Six original communications for different purposes that demonstrate a range of writing and presentation styles and that would be communicated by different methods. Each document needs:
Information sources, plans and annotated draft copies of documents / communications to show their development to meet their purpose; Final versions of documents/communications that meet their purpose; Evidence that a range of software tools and techniques to achieve the desired impact; An evaluation of the documents/communications produced and your performance in completing the task;

One of the documents will be a newsletter descriptions of the different methods of communicating information and the technologies that support them,

Identify

Many organisations have rules and guidelines to help people work effectively and avoid problems. These are known as standard ways of working. They are very important for people working with ICT. There are many reasons for having standard ways of working in ICT. The most important is that information in ICT systems can be easily lost or misused. Standard ways of working help you to overcome these problems. In your work with ICT, you need to ensure that you:
Manage your work effectively; Keep information secure; Work safely.

Identify

Read through the G040 unit specification On one side of A4 summarise the standard ways of working from pages 7,8 and 9 of the specification - this will act as a guide for the completion of all units of work.
