water?
By Gigi Tse 6C(18), Emily Chui 6C(6) and Michelle Tang 6C(24)
Abstract
Filtration is very important to our daily life
We used sand and other materials to filter muddy water We also added activated charcoal
Introduction
Our aim is to find out which arrangement is the best way to filter muddy water.
Filtration has a very long history and it is still improving from time to time
Materials
150ml of beans 50ml per arrangement, 150ml of sand 50ml per arrangement, 210ml of stone 70ml per arrangement, 600ml of water(200ml per mixture), 3 pieces of 7x9 filter cotton,1 bottles of sparkling water(1liter per bottle), activated charcoal 6 piece, weight scale, 1 bag of soil, beakers.
Steps
Cut the bottle into half turn around the top part and put arrangement 1 in it
Steps
Pour all the muddy water into the filter and wait until all the water flows down
Steps
Pour the filtrated water to the beaker and put the beaker on to the weight scale
it at last repeat the whole progress except for changing arrangement 1 to 2 and 2 to 3
Variables
Independent Variable
Controlled Variable Dependent Variables
We only change the arrangements of the material inside the filter bottle.
Amount of water, soil, and all the materials in the filter bottle should be equal. Weight of the soil water before the experiment and after the experiment

Results
Weight (gram) Arrangement 1 Arrangement 2 Arrangement 3 56g 82.6g 62.6g Milliliters (ml) 150ml 170ml 150ml
From the results above, we found out that arrangement 1 was the lightest. Follow by arrangement 3. Arrangement 2 was the heaviest with 82.6g.
Conclusion
Why arrangement 2 was the heaviest and the water was brownish? Our prediction is correct 1 and 3 is the best arrangement, there was no sand in the water, also filtrated all the soil. This whole process worked because of the water particles which were called molecules. The mud particles were way bigger than molecules so they could not get through the gaps and stuck in the filter.
