Nano-Spindt FED (Field Emission Display)

What is Nano-spindt FED?

Efficient self-emissive design
Reproduces images using array of nanocone emitters to excite phosphors and it is combined with a line-sequential impulsive drive system.

More than 10 thousand emitters for each pixel

The Nano-Spindt FED delivers clear, distortion-less images that are precisely focused across the entire screen.

Thin, Reliable, Power-Saving Package

There is no need to use a backlight nor is it necessary to generate high voltage to drive the cathode. The emitter array reduces the current load applied to individual emitters.

Superlative image quality

High-Speed motion traceability
It allows the use of a line-sequential impulse drive wherein a single signal line hit by electron beams emits light momentarily.

Impulse Drive System (nano-spindt FED and CRT) Assures natural, continuous motion with no blur.

Hold-Type Drive System (PDP and Active Matrix LCD and Organic EL) Exhibits visible image lag when tracing fast motion.

SMPTE/EBU Phosphors evaluated highly by professionals

These phosphors accurately reproduce a certain complete subset of colors in accordance with the SMPTE/EBU colorimetry. As a result, the nano-spindt FED not only delivers exceptional moving image quality but also ensures premium visual performance over long periods of time.

Tractable gamma characteristics

Outstanding black reproduction capability, the easy to adjust gamma characteristics of nano-spindt FED always assure colors true to original, with linearly reproduced brightness levels.

Excellent contrast and wide viewing angle

Brightness peak is high. The self-emissive design also assures a very wide field of view.

Exceptional power efficiency and durability

Power consumption is dramatically lower than LCDs where a backlight must always be on plus it has a very high reliability.

Compatibility with high frame rates

A frame rate four times higher than that of current broadcast programs.

Nano-spindt emitter Helps to drive the cathode at a low voltage.

Ultra-high density emitter array Assures uniform color and brightness across the entire screen.

Newly developed phosphors Major contributory factor behind the superior color accuracy.

Originally developed emitter fabrication technology

The emitter chips used in our FED are precisely created to be 120nm.

Easy to manufacture panel construction

Enables easy manufacture to the required precision level using any TFT production system. The Nano-spindt FED is simple to build, with far fewer components than other flat panel displays such as LCD.

Reliable vacuum package with thin, compressionresistant ceramic spacer

Electrical characteristics of the spacer have been optimized to prevent charge buildup, which in turn, impairs the image quality by causing the electron beams to bend.

Application versatility
Broadcast and video production
Its incredibly accurate reproduction makes this display perfect for use as a master monitor or picture monitor. Extremely thin, durable, and power efficient, it is also suitable for installation in a relay van for live broadcasting.

Computer graphics and game production

Since it uses the self-emissive technology that has long been the standard in the video production industry, color matching between computer-generated graphics and camera-captured images is also easier than ever.

Graphics and still photo production

With true black reproduction, the screen view is nearly exact to the final print. Also, color management is equal to conventional CRTs.

Hospital monitors
The Nano-spindt FED is the best to use in medical applications such as CT and endoscope monitors. It provides the most accurate and detailed picture available today.

Security systems
The sharp focus and high contrast of Nano-spindt FEDs become especially vital when trying to detect quiet movements in the dark.

News
According to the spokesperson, initial production will start at the end of 2009 and will be limited to 10,000 units in the first year, all of them business focused monitors for use.

The Bad News is that Field Emission Technology FET is closing down.
It wasn't a good sign when they couldn't raise funds to buy the pioneer plant they had hoped to use to manufacture field emission displays.

Field Emission Displays may emerge again in the future from another manufacturer but not Sony or FET
