EG1108 Part I Description as in IVLE - Outline

EG1108 aims to give an introduction to electric circuit analysis (Part I) and related applications (Part II) for non-ECE engineering students.
Part I of the module covers the use of KVL, KCL, superposition and circuit equivalence techniques to analyze both dc and ac circuits.

0A - 1

In ac circuit analysis, the use of sums of complex sinusoids to represent signals is introduced, leading to how a linear circuit consisting of resistors, capacitors and inductors can be understood and characterized in the steady state in terms of its frequency response. An important application of this is the design of RLC tuned circuits which are used in hand phones, TV, and other communication systems to pick out the channel that one wants to listen to in the entire radio spectrum. Towards the end, Part I of EG1108 will touch on the use of solving simple differential equations to analyze the transient behavior of circuits, as when an electrical system is switched on and off.

EG1108 Part I Description as in IVLE - Learning Outcomes

0A - 2

(1) Be able to use common techniques based on KCL, KVL, superposition, circuit equivalence to analyze dc and ac circuits.
(2) Be able to find the frequency response of linear circuits consisting of resistors, capacitors and inductors. (3) Be able to analyze and design simple tuned circuits. (4) Be able to find the transient response of circuits by formulating and solving the appropriate governing differential equations

EG1108 Part I Description as in IVLE - Teaching Materials

Please download the zip file from the work bin of IVLE. Unzip to get all the lecture, tutorial and simulation materials for this part of the module.

0A - 3

You must read the file on 00 Prelude. This contains important information on how this half of the module will be run.

The file 00 Summary gives a summary of definitions, formulas and techniques. It will be useful when you attempt tutorial or other questions.
The files 01 12.. contain the main teaching materials used in lectures.

The files AA AB.. are appendices, meant to refresh concepts and principles you should know before taking this module. It is unlikely that we will have time to teach these in details in class.
The files BA BB.. are simulation programs. Just double click to run. After running, click the Info button to see what has been simulated. Treat these as games, play around with the control, see the results, and try to learn something from them. It is unlikely that we will have time to run these in class. The files CA CB.. are the laboratory manuals for the hands-on sessions for the whole module. Read these and do the necessary preparatory work before coming to the laboratories.
