My thoughts about the importance of effective leaders and managers for a successful school

Management
Act of achieving the goals and objectives of the organization through planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

According to (Ricketts, 2009),Management is to exercise executive, administrative, and supervisory direction of a group or organization.
Management is the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources. (Lecture notes, 2011)

Leadership
Leadership is the ability to lead and motivate a group of individuals to achieve a certain goal.

According to (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, et al.: 2004), Leadership is the process of influencing a group toward the achievement of goals.

Leadership is influencing others actions in achieving desirable actions (Cuban: 1988).

Difference between formal leadership and informal leadership


Formal leadership
when an organization officially bind a leader to drive members towards organizational goals

Informal leadership
do not have official organizational authority to influence others but their special talent and skill influences and leads other members of the organization

According to (Ricketts, 2009), When managers are involved in influencing a group of employees to meet its goals, they are operating under leadership. In addition, when leaders are involved in aspects such as planning, organizing, staffing or controlling, they are operating within the management

Major difference between leader and the manager

management power comes from the position in the organizational structure. leadership power comes from sources that are not invested in organizations, such as personal interests, goals and values. (Lecture notes 2011)

management is about climbing the ladder efficiently and leadership is making sure the ladder is leaning against the right wall

Managers have subordinates. Subordinate does the work for them because they are being paid for doing so.
