JEAN WATSON

DO YOU CARE?

The Philosophy and Science of Caring

The basis for the theory of human caring revolves around ten carative processes. Watson states that these ten carative processes are the core of nursing, procedures and tasks are the trim. Curing disease is the domain of medicinethe caring stance that nursing has always held is being threatened by tasks and technology (George, 1990).

Major Concepts, Assertions and Hypotheses

The Seven Assumptions

Caring can be effectively demonstrated and practiced only interpersonally.

Caring consists of carative factors that result in the satisfaction of certain human needs.
Effective caring promotes health and individual or family growth. Caring responses accept person not only as he or she is now but as what he or she may become.

A caring environment is one that offers the development of potential while allowing the person to choose the best action for himself or herself at a given point in time. Caring is more healthogenic than is curing. A science of caring is complementary to the science of curing. The practice of caring is central to nursing.

Watsons The Four Major Concepts

1. Human being
a valued person in and of him or herself to be cared for in general a philosophical view of a person as a fully functional integrated self. He, human is viewed as greater than and different from, the sum of his or her parts.

2.

Health

A high level of overall physical, mental and social functioning. A general adaptive-maintenance level of daily functioning. The absence of illness (or the presence of efforts that leads its absence)

3. Environment
It is transmitted by the

culture of the profession as a unique way of coping with its environment.

4. Nursing
Nursing is concerned with promoting health, preventing illness, caring for the sick and restoring health.

10 CARATIVE PROCESSES

CARITAS Process
Caritas comes from the Latin word meaning to cherish, to appreciate, to give special attention, if not loving, attention to; it connotes something that is very fine, that indeed is precious.

10. ExistentialPhenomenological and spiritual forces

Opening and attending to spiritual-mysterious, and existential dimensions of one's own life-death; soul care for self and the one-being-care-for

The first three carative factors form the philosophical foundation for the science of caring. The remaining seven carative factors spring from the foundation laid by these first three.

Nursing has at its core the metaparadigm of person, environment, nursing and health.

Nursing Metaparadigm

NURSING METAPARADIGM

Watson has defined these in relationship to her theory. Watsons metaparadigm definitions listed below are from Nursing Theories by Julia George (1990):
Person: A valued person to be cared for, respected, nurtured, understood, and assisted.

Environment:
Caring (and nursing) has existed in every society. Every society has had some people who care for others. A caring attitude is not transmitted from generation to generation by genes. It is transmitted by the culture of the profession as a unique way of coping with its environment.

Health:
Unity and harmony within the mind, body, and soul; health is associated with the degree of congruence between the self as perceived and the self as experienced

Nursing:
A human science of persons and human health-illness experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, esthetic, and ethical human care transactionsNursing involves understanding health, illness and the human experience...

In conclusion, Jean Watson stated,

Time and caring is what sets the nursing profession apart from medicine..

Application to NURSING

Scenario
Jen Nurjur, a 22 year old college senior, suffered bilateral fractures of the femur arrives to your unit after having pins inserted and traction applied to the bilateral femurs in the emergency department. She received IVP morphine 10 mg 45 minutes ago. She complains of severe pain to her legs and is crying heavily and shaking. Vital signs are : Heart rate 126, Respirations 28 and shallow, BP 140/92, and temperature is 99.7F. A PCA morphine pump is ordered.

Relation to THEORY..
According to Jean Watson., CARE is essential for our patients., So in the scenario The Philosophy and Science of Caring will not only focus in the vital signs, the medication administration, but also on how Jen Nurjur feels about himself and how he see things after the incident., A simple touch can make a big difference for a simple relief.
