1 Introduction
Indentured servant-must work for the person who paid for the trip to the colonies for 3-6 years. People came to the colonies for religious freedom, chance to own land, some convicts and slaves were forced.

3.2 The New England, Middle, and Southern Colonial Regions



New England Colonies Mass, R.I., Conn, N.H. Came for religious freedom Long, cold winters; rocky wilderness Econ: small farms, lumber, fishing, shipbuilding, trade.

The New England Colonies: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire

Middle Colonies
N.Y., Penn., N.J., Del. People represented many countries and cultures. Looking for religious freedom

MD, VA, NC, SC, GA Grew cash crops (rice, tobacco, etc.) Had large plantations (huge farms that relied on slave labor).

Southern Colonies: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

Government In The Colonies


Most were self-governing that elected a general assembly to make laws. Governor was appointed by king and could overrule assembly. Were very democratic (for free, white, landowning men).

3.3 Massachusetts
Was settled mainly by Puritans looking to escape religious persecution. 1620 Pilgrims land on Plymouth Rock. Created Mayflower Compact; tells how they were to be governed. IE. of self-government. Founded by W. Bradford and J. Winthrop.

3.4 Rhode Island


Accepted a variety of religions. One of the biggest slave-trading centers in the world

3.5 Connecticut
Created first plan of government for the colonies called the Fundamental Orders, which granted voting rights to all men of the Puritan Church. The colony had more rights than almost any other colony.

3.6 New York


Founded by Duke of York, who issued own laws and decided the amounts of taxes people would pay. Became one of the busiest and important ports in the world.

3.7 Pennsylvania
Founded by W. Penn, who was a Quaker. Quakers were unwelcome in England so they est. a colony in America in 1681. Founded to be a safe place for Quakers to worship. Penn. b/c the first democracy in America.

Founded by Lord Baltimore as a safe place for Catholics and Protestants to worship. Passed Americas first law guaranteeing religious liberty; The Act Concerning Religion.

3.9 Virginia
Economy was based on tobacco. Owners initially used indentured servants as labor, and quickly turned to slavery. By 1700 slavery had become a way of life in VA.

3.10 Georgia
Founded by J. Oglethorpe to be a refuge for poor people and debtors in England. Mostly settled by adventurers and those seeking religious freedom. The colony was a way to keep the Spanish from moving north out of Florida.
