In 1707 United Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the political union of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland. In 1800 the Kingdom of Ireland merged with the Kingdom of Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. However, Ireland was partitioned in 1922 and only northern Ireland remained part of the UK. UKs emergence as a world power can be traced back to the defeat of France in the Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) in which the UK emerged as the principal naval and economic of the world.

The UKs time as a world leader was nearing its end due to financial hardships caused by WWI (1914-1918 and compounded by the Great Depression (1929-1932) 4/17/12 afterwards.

Type of Regime

The United Kingdom has a Constitutional Monarchy

A constitutional monarchy is a form of government in which a monarch acts as head of state within the parameters of a written constitution. It differs from absolute monarchy in that an absolute monarch serves as the sole source of political power in the state and is not legally bound by any constitution.

The UK also employs a parliamentary system. Their regime also includes Proportional Representation

The UK utilizes the First-Past-the-Post electoral system. The citizens vote for a party, not a specific person, to run for Prime Minister, although the party lets the public know which person they would designate as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has the confidence that s/he can get legislation passed. However the Prime Minister may also be more easily removed by the legislature through a vote of no confidence.
