TIRE ANALYSIS

REVIEW OF TREAD WEAR

SHOULDER STEP/CHAMFER
Typical of Radial Tires in slow wearing operations and may vary with tread design. Little loss in overall mileage will result.

EROSION/RIVER/ CHANNEL WEAR

Circumferential wear along rib edges and may be wavy and vary in width around tire. Characteristic of slow wear rate of radial tires and is common in linehaul operations with light loads and frequent turning

FULL SHOULDER WEAR


Excessive wear extending across entire shoulder rib to a major tread groove. Result of side scrubbing from incorrect toe or drive axle misalignment. Toe-in wears on outside of both steers Toe-out wears on inside of both steers Drive axles wear on inside of one steer and outside of other

FEATHERING WEAR
Tread ribs are worn so one side of rib is higher than the other. Usually caused by excessive scrubbing from misalignment of Toe, Drive Axles, Ackerman Angle, or worn or damage suspension parts

CUPPING /SCALLOP WEAR

Localized dished out areas of fast wear creating a scalloped appearance around the tire. Usually due to a Out of Balance condition, improper Rim/ Wheel mounting, or Bad Shocks

ONE - SIDED TIRE WEAR


Excessive tire wear extending from the shoulder to the center of the tread. Usually caused from Camber, Worn King Pins, loose Front Wheel Bearings, or excessive axle loads

DIAGONAL WEAR
Localized flat spots worn diagonally across the tread, often repeating around the tread circumference.
Usually caused by a Run Out and/ or Out of Balance condition, loose Wheel Bearings, or be started by a brake skid.

ECCENTRIC/ OUT-OF-ROUND WEAR


Considerable difference in tread depth between 90 and 180 degrees apart. Usually a result of Radial Run Out, Wheel/ Rim, Hub, Tire, or improper bead seating of tire on rim.

ERRATIC DEPRESSION WEAR


Random erratic wear around circumference of tire.
Usually caused by Worn or wrong Shocks, Loose Wheel Bearings, Out-of-Balance conditions. May be aggravated by high speed empty hauls.

HEEL / TOE Wear


Each Lug is worn high to low from front to back around the tire. May also show up as alternate lug wear. Most often related to mismatched inflation pressures or tire diameter in a dual assembly.

BRAKE SKID DAMAGE


Localized spot of excessive wear across the tread surface showing abrasion marks.
Brake Skid usually occurs on drive and trailer tires. If condition does not extend 2/32 of tread, duals can be rematched 180 degrees from each other.

TREAD CHUNKING
Sections of tread torn from the tire.

Caused by tire running over curbs, rails or from localized impacts.

CHIPPING/FLAKING/CHUNKING
Rough abraded tread surface with numerous small flakes or chunks of tread removed.

Operation of tires with over-the-road tread rubber on gravel surfaces Misapplication of tire

DYNO-BURN
Swollen, spongy area in the center of the rib/lug extending 360 degrees around the tire.

Caused by excessive heat buildup on a dynomometer.

RIB TEAR
Tear at the base of the main tread grooves, generally at the shoulders

Caused by running over curbs and rails or by severe localized impacts.

SPIN DAMAGE
Circumferential cuts or lines around the tire.

Usually caused from spinning drive tires on Ice, Sand, and Gravel.
