How the school works? (1/2)

Two separate periods: The capacity of the classrooms are not enough to take the number of students. Hence, the school operates on two separate periods of time, the primary classes extend from 7 : am to 11:45 am. The preparatory school extends from 12:00 am to 4:00 pm. Every class lasts for only 35 minutes. Primary classes have one teacher that gives all of the subjects. Sources of income of the school: School fees; they tell the students that they are book fees, yet books are for free. There exists no firm system to collect the fees, some students pay, others dont. Some students pay in installments. Financial support from the ministry of education; 4000 LE (at the beginning of the year)+ 3000 LE (at the end of the year).

How the school works? (2/2)

Informal Education Informal classes usually start after school timings. There are supplementary classes at the school and private lessons at one of the students houses. Supplementary classes at the school Cost:
Primary: 5LE/ student/ month Preparatory: 10 LE/ student/ month

Private lessons Cost:

Primary: 10LE/ student/ month Preparatory: 15 LE/ student/ month The number of attendees are less than classes at school.

The Teachers
The total number of teachers are 23 teachers at the school Contracts
( you cant really fire them) ; they are more qualified as they have gone through more tests to earn the degree, like ICDL test. There are only 2 of them. 51( yearly contracts) 6( free lancers)

Salaries 714 : LE 863:LE + bonus 121: LE + bonus

Number of students and Classrooms

The school is composed of preparatory and primary school stages only .

We can realize that the number of females to males at the school decreases , as the educational grades increase. The number of drop outs also increase.

SWOT analysis
Strengths
Willingness of teachers and administration to cooperate Students (that weve met) dont entirely hate school A large area of land that can be used as a playground Some of the teachers took CLE training

Weaknesses
Teachers hit the students No greenery/sports field within the schools campus The number of students outnumber the classrooms capacity Two separate periods for prep and primary Short classes (35 min) Insufficient number of teachers Fee collection is very undisciplined which leaves the school with less income. No supervision over the collection/spending of money High level of illiteracy among kids Extracurricular activities are not encouraged at the school, leaving students unhappy and not motivated to learn.

Opportunities
Afaq el hayahs willingness to help financially and technically Existence of teachers, if money was allocated to hire them. Relatively small village (easier to handle)

Threats
Rigid culture ( early marriage, unimportance of education) Poverty (makes working more attractive than learning) Limited options (illegalities) on increasing the number of classrooms Underpaid teachers Free education system at public schools The teachers and principle regard as Zy el 7okooma

Objective
To enhance the school experience of Kafr Hemied students and ensure that they understand the importance of attending school and continuing education Creating/ Enhancing School Systems -Oversight on budget and spending -Creating proper disciplinary systems

Quality of Education

Suggested Projects

Summer School
Summer school taking place at Kafr hemied by the end of May and will last till the 20th of September. The objective of the program is to enhance the reading and writing abilities of the students. They need our help in:
Adding the fun element (e.g. Soccer tournament, music, art, etc) Financial support (salaries for teachers and incentives for the students)

Earn & Learn:

Students sense the poverty and decide that its better to work rather than go to school, because: They believe that whether they work or not, theyd end up like those who didnt go to school They dont benefit that much at school. Earn and learn (a project running in India) provides students with a source of income (has to be higher than what theyre currently earning) on the condition that they go to school. The program adjusts itself to the life of the student and their exam times and the time they need to study and excel at school. We need to find a supplier willing to base his workshop at Kafr Hemied and find the market to sell the students hand made products. (carpets, khan Elkhalili crafts)
This Job would offer the students: Better work conditions than the bricks factory, Better Payment, Skills theyd use in the future.

Teachers Task Force

Form a Task Force of experienced teachers from different schools and different specializations, This task force will be like an advisory body responsible for:

Conducting regular workshops with the Teachers of Kafr Hemied on different topics (e.g. Class management, Student behavior, Hitting the students) Providing Kafr Hemied teachers with tools they can use, Providing afaq el hayah with consultancy and recommendations on how to best use our presence at Kafr Hemied school. This task force provides the teachers with the necessary trainings and technical skills (Ethics for the teachers and the technical skills)
