WIRELESS PICK AND PLACE ROBOT

OBJECTIVES
As the name suggests, a pick and place robot would lift a specific object and will place it at the desired location. To improve the mobility, we have used wireless transmission.

MARKET SURVEY
A market survey is a systematic collection, recording, analysis and interpretation of data relating to the existing or potential market for a product or services. Under this section we would be justifying selection of our components compared to the other similar components available.

List of major components and materials used: Wireless Module DC Motors Encoder/Decoder IC Motor Driver IC Robot Chassis and Arm

1. Wireless Module
By definition, a module is a self-contained component of a system, which has a well defined interface to the other components.

Various wireless modules available

1) IR Module:- Needs line of sight operation 2) Zigbee:- It is both power and bandwidth constrained 3) Bluetooth:- Short range, costly and complex Due to the limitations and constraints of the above mentioned modules, we narrowed it down to the more suitable option, i.e RF Module.

RF Module:-

Tx 4 Pin, Rx 8 Pin

RF modules are available for various frequencies like 315/433/868/915 MHz. We have used RF module which would transmit/receive signal at 433 MHz frequency, as at this frequency the range of operation is about 400 feet(approx. 130 meters) in open area and about 200 feet(approx. 65 meters) indoor.

2. DC Motors
DC motor is available in many different types- plastic gear-box - metal geared - position of shaft - rpm

There are various companies manufacturing DC motors, but we found very minor variations between them. We selected DC motors of Vega Robokits Corporation.

3. Encoder/Decoder IC
There are various encoder-decoder ICs available in the market, TRI CODER IC, HT64X(8 bit), HT12X(4 bit) etc. As in our project, there is a need to drive four DC motors bi-directionally, we require 8 bit encoder/decoder IC. Thus, we narrowed down on the TRI CODER IC as it fulfills our basic requirements.

There are various motor driving ICs available. Some of them are - L297 - L292 - L293D We are already familiar with L293D, also it is widely used driver IC for such applications. Output current(600mA) which matches the DC motor input requirement. Easily available.

5. Robot chassis and Arm

Robot chassis can be made by using various types of materials such as:- Wooden - Aluminium - Mild Steel (MS) Aluminium chassis provides more strength to structure rather than wooden chassis, while the use of steel chassis results in increased inertia and weight.
