Review and Testing

Patrol :

To familiarize the Campus Security Officer with the basic concepts of patrol and patrol procedures.

Purposes of patrol Types of patrol Identification of safety hazards Fire control systems Security systems

Emergency Response :

To familiarize the Campus Security Officer with information and techniques for response to emergency situations.

Categories of emergencies Descriptions of emergencies and their critical nature Components of an emergency response plan Preservation and protection of evidence Identification of workplace violence

Traffic Control :

To provide the Campus Security Officer with the basic techniques of controlling the movement of vehicular traffic.

Situations requiring traffic direction Equipment for traffic control Hand signals and gestures used in traffic direction Factors that complicate traffic flow Demonstration of effective traffic control techniques

Communication :

To familiarize the Campus Security Officer with communications tools and their impact.

Techniques for gathering information Components of communication Zones and personal space Demonstration of effective communication when gathering information

Customer Service & Professionalism:

To acquaint the participant with the type and manner of professional conduct necessary for being successfully employed in a campus law enforcement environment.

Appearance and demeanor Appropriate conduct Security Officer Code of Conduct Dealing with special populations effectively

Incident Documentation:

To present the campus security officer with the purpose, value and components of incident documentation.

Purposes of field notes Purposes of report writing Characteristics of well written reports Preparation of a report using who, what, when, where, why and how Basic legal and institutional considerations (FERPA, HIPPA, handbooks and policy manuals)

Testing

Optional testing. Certificate of attendance or successful completion. Agency head to determine at registration.

Other Recommendations

Pilot curriculum course offering in Winston-Salem September 1 - 2, 2009 location UNCSA. Train-the-trainer approach to create pool of instructors. Create approved instructor list for the Association. Discussion about use of NCJA as possible delivery site.
