INSTALLING THE 3-3-5 DEFENSE

WHY THE 3-3-5 DEFENSE?

Gives Maximum numbers to stop the running game Able to give a Variety of looks with Minimal Teaching Pre-snap movement creates Confusion (Organized Chaos) Physical, Aggressive, Attacking style of play Allows smaller, faster athletes to be Successful Attacks the Pass Protection weaknesses Creates Negative Yardage plays and Turnovers Makes the offense become Protection Oriented Fun for the players!

Our Defensive Mode

We are not a traditional gap control, read defense (although it can be played in that mode if desired). We are a stunting, blitzing, attacking defense, taking advantage of our speed and giving our undersized defense a chance to be successful We will begin our installation/teaching process with the base defense, a 3-3 Stack playing cover 3

We feel it is necessary to teach this base before we progress to slants, stunts, and blitzes

We are playing the 3-3 with the following defensive philosophy:

1. TAKE AWAY WHAT THE OFFENSE DOES BEST; MAKE THEM BEAT YOU WITH SOMETHING ELSE. (More than 1 adjustment for a particular offensive formation) Examples:
Defending an Offense using spread formations to run the ball more effectively Defending an Offense using spread formations to pass the ball more effectively

TAKE AWAY WHAT THE OFFENSE DOES BEST

We are playing the 3-3 with the following defensive philosophy:

2. Whatever scheme you use, NEVER let the offense gain an advantage by formation, shifts, or motion. ALWAYS have base defensive checks built into the scheme to handle these things.

3.Characteristics of a sound defense:

A. Every gap is accounted for by a particular player

We are playing the 3-3 with the following defensive philosophy:

5. Offenses operate on rhythm, that rhythm MUST be disrupted. Effective ways to disrupt offensive rhythm are: stemming fronts, line stunts, blitzes, and disguising pass coverage. 6. Make the QB read the pass coverage POST SNAP; dont let him settle in before the snap and know where his primary read is. 7. Multiple fronts and/or coverages MAY better serve to defend particular offensive schemes.

We are playing the 3-3 with the following defensive philosophy:

8. 9. Pursuit drill must be run every day Tackling drills must be run every day.

10. Whatever defenses you run, the kids MUST BELIEVE in it. They must understand what its strengths and weaknesses are, and what you are trying to accomplish with a particular front, blitz, or coverage.

11. Option assignments must be built in

Defensive Goals
WIN! Hold Our Opponents To 3.0 YPC Hold Opponents to 10 Points or Less Get 3 Turnovers Score or get a turnover in score zone Prevent Big Plays No Runs over 12 yards No Passes over 20 Yards No TDs after sudden change 50% 3 and Out Win 3rd Down 75% and 4th Down 100% Hold Opponents to less than 50% Completion Hold Opponent to 150 yards of total offense

Defensive Absolutes
1. Stop The Run: No one will run the football successfully against our defense. We will commit as many people to the LOS as necessary in order to stop the run. 2. Control the Pass: We are primarily a zone coverage team. We will take away the deep ball and not allow our opponent to score on big plays. We will be proficient in our coverage packages. Our secondary will play hard and fast, forcing incomplete passes and turnovers.

Defensive Absolutes
3. We will be the best tackling team in our conference! We emphasize fundamental tackling with extreme effort. We will punish ball carriers and develop an attitude and swagger necessary to dominate our opponent. 4. Pursuit: We will get 11 people to the football every play! It does not take talent to hustle to the football. We want as many of our helmets on the ball carrier as we can each play. 5. Create Takeaways: We must create turnovers to give ourselves opportunities for a short field.

Turnovers
We will create a minimum of three turnovers a game by attacking our opponent. We will work our strip and takeaway drills everyday in practice until they become second nature. Lift and tear Lift and Punch Scoop and Score Slide and Secure

Dont stay tied up with O-Linemen

Find the ball after initial technique is executed and redirect to the football Beat half a man (slant technique)

30 Stack Personnel
Inside Linebackers At the heart of the 3-3 stack defense are three inside linebackers. Against a 2 x 2 set: The Sam linebacker will align in a stack position behind the Strong End. The Mike linebacker will align stacked position over the nose, playing a zero technique The Will linebacker will align in a stack position behind the Weak End.

General Coaching Points for Linebackers

Read Slow, React Fast Primary Keys are guards; they will take you to the ball Its not a crime to get blocked, its a crime to stay blocked. (Dont walk away from a block) Play fast -sideline to sideline

30 Stack Personnel
Outside Linebacker-Strong Safety Hybrids The Bandit will align to the formation strength (to a TE in a pro set). When the offense employs a spread 2x2 set, the Bandit aligns over the #2. Exact depth and leverage will depend on down, distance, coverage call, and game plan.

The Rover will align to the open side of an offensive formation (away from a TE in a pro set). When the offense employs a spread 2x2 set, the Rover aligns over the #2 opposite the Bandit. Exact depth and leverage will depend on down, distance, coverage call, and game plan.

General Coaching Points for Bandit & Rover

In Cover 3, execute your run force responsibilities with aggressive confidence-NO ONE GETS OUTSIDE! Maintain outside leverage vs. run Your kingdom is the flats-control what happens there

In blitzing situations, attack with a frenzy

30 Stack Personnel
Secondary Left Corner will align over #1 wide receiver to defensive left. Standard cover three alignment will be seven yards deep and one yard inside. Play by play alignment may vary greatly, depending on down, distance, coverage call, and game plan. Right Corner will align over #1 wide receiver to defensive right. Standard cover three alignment will be seven yards deep and one yard inside. Play by play alignment may vary greatly, depending on down, distance, coverage call, and game plan.

Defensive Line Techniques

Defensive lineman will line up with a slightly elongated stance. In passing situations we want the butt in the air The foot that is back will be the hand that is down. Weight will be 60 percent on the hand Use a ball key, ball moves, you move The foot replaces the hand We attack 1/3 of the man! We never play the middle of the man unless on a bull technique. We attack our gap shoulder and feel the block of the offensive lineman. We want to be physical on the gap shoulder Maintain gap integrity while squeezing the gap. Never penetrate past the butt of the offensive lineman Control your gap and maintain gap integrity

Cover 33 Rules: We are sending 5 (3 linemen and usually 2 linebackers) The remaining linebacker is a hole defender We will cover both seams, not allow vertical releases by #2s

Why Pressure?
To augment your normal pass rush numbers To create a big play and change momentum To attack an offensive tendency

To force a short throw (sight adjustment) in a third and long situation

To attack a weakness in protection scheme or personnel

To break a defensive tendency (as a change up)

Principles for Applying Pressure

Disguise your intentions if at all possible Use more than one disguise per blitz

Know the protection scheme you are attacking

Know the opponents hot reads and sight adjustments (may be able to force a certain throw favorable to you)

Ensure your defense is gap sound

Assign proper run force In man schemes, every potential receiver is accounted for Dont allow offense to create a mismatch Create mismatches that favor the defense-attack weakness

Principles for Maximizing Effectiveness of Pressure Scheme

Pressure Calls MUST be scripted. Blitz Period /7 on 7/Team
Practice the four looks (show, half, time, depth) Show unusual formations/motion Force checks to prevent unfavorable situations Emphasize blitzing defenders redirect to the ball if play is a run

BLITZ COVERAGE RULES

When 1 man is Blitzing in our 30 defense we stay in our cover 3. When 2 men are Blitzing in our 30 defense we shift from cover 3 to cover 2. When 3 men are Blitzing in our 30 defense we play cover 1 or cover 0.

PURSUIT
The Key To Great Defense
30 Stack Pursuit Rules

Defending the Run

The 30 stack defense is designed to stop the run cold. This can only be accomplished when each defender uses proper technique that will allow them to react quickly to the ball carrier. The following are the techniques used in defending the run. 1) Chase and Collapse 2) Force 3) Contain 4) Alley 5) Last Man in Pursuit

Chase and Collapse

In order to play sound football from the backside, you must be aware of pursuit techniques. Three of the most important factors in this phase of football are defending the cutback zone, reverse, and backside leverage (bootleg). These responsibilities fall on the backside End and backside SS or Outside LB. However certain pressure packages will require an inside LB to use one or more of these techniques. The defender who is assigned to the cutback will have collapse responsibility and the defender who has the reverse and bootleg will have chase responsibilities.

Chase: Last down lineman on the LOS typically has this

responsibility. When a chase defender reads ball away, he will pursue as deep as the ball, keeping the ball carrier or QB on his inside shoulder. If the chase defender reads pass he is responsible for outside contain of the QB. A chase defender continues to chase ball away until he reaches opposite B-gap. Once the chase defender reaches opposite B-gap he will then take proper pursuit angles to ball carrier or QB.

Chase and Collapse (Cont)

Collapse: The SS will typically have collapse. The SS pursues the
football on or behind the line of scrimmage he has collapse responsibility. Collapse technique by a defender, puts him looking for any potential cutback by the running back or QB scramble. When collapse defender reads flow away he will then begin to collapse down the LOS looking to see if ball cutbacks. Once the collapse defender reaches opposite A gap he will take his proper pursuit angle to the ball carrier.

Force: The force player has pitch responsibility on option, and no pass
responsibilities with a run at him. The force defender must make the play on any perimeter runs at him. His aiming point is the outside jersey number of the ball carrier. If the force defender is crack blocked the secondary force or contain defender will become the primary force.

Force/Contain/Alley/Last Man in Pursuit

Contain: The contain defender also referred to as secondary force

becomes the primary force defender on the crack block. They are responsible for halfback pass, stop and go routes, and should not support the run until there is no longer a threat of the pass; i.e., the ball crossed the LOS.

Alley: The alley defender checks #2 on a TE

type dump pass in the seam as he runs to the alley. The alley defender has QB on the option, and his aiming point is the inside jersey number of the ball carrier. The alley course is from an inside to outside track, similar to a banana.

Last Man In Pursuit: The LMP is typically the backside corner. The LMP
is responsible for securing the backside #1 receiver. His pursuit angle is to save a touchdown, and not allow the ball carrier to cut back, reverse or cross their face. The corner does not cross the far hash unless it is to save a TD.

Determining Strength
We will establish a formation strength every down. We want to determine where are greatest threat is located. We call out personnel and make a tight call as the offense gets set. We use the alignment of the backs, receivers, and tight ends to determine strength.

Who is their best player? Who is their playmaker? Who is their 3rd Down Guy? What is their favorite play? What are they known for? What and who do we have to stop to win? What match-up can we win? Can we defeat their protection? Who can we cover man-to-man?
