BUSINESS CONTINUITY (aka BIZ CON)

An organizational activity that is performed to ensure that

critical business functions are available in the event of a disaster or any other unforeseen event

Activities that come under Biz Cons purview include:

Project Management System Backups Change Control & Help Desk

Contains standards, guidelines, procedures etc to ensure

that a firms business continues without stoppage

IS SEPARATE FROM DISASTER RECOVERY

BIZ CON & DISASTER RECOVERY

Disaster Recovery is the process, policies & procedures

followed for recovery & continuation of technology infrastructure critical to an organization Is carried out in the aftermath of a natural or humaninduced disaster Is also a subset of Business Continuity

BUSINESS CONTINUITY = BIGGER PICTURE DISASTER RECOVERY = SPECIFIC PORTION (related to data & hardware infrastructure recovery)

STEPS IN A BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN

BACKUP & RECOVERY OF DATA

BACKUP: Is a copy of data from your main database Helps users to reconstruct their data after any event that causes a loss of data Is of two types: Physical & Logical Physical Backup is a copy of files (that contain database information) that is saved on storage devices (like hard disks) or offline (like tape) In summary, Backup & Recovery are basically different strategies & procedures involved in protecting your database from data loss, and reconstructing the database after any kind of data loss

DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN (D.R.P.)

There are essentially two main categories of disasters: Natural Disasters floods, hurricanes, etc Artificial / Man Made Disasters Infrastructure failure, Bio-Terrorism, etc Disaster Recovery Plan is a series of steps to be followed in case IT

infrastructure is severely impacted by any form of a disaster

Is dependent on the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) of the

organization
BCP identifies key metrics such as Recovery Point Objective (RPO) &

Recovery Time Objective (RTO); DRP uses them to figure out the best possible recovery plan

COMMON DRP STRATEGIES

Backups made to tape & sent off site (a secondary data centre) Backups made to disk (on site) and automatically copied to disk off

site
Replication of data to an off site location (using SAN Storage Area

Network) technology
Database Recovery techniques such as Mirroring, Log Shipping and

Failover Clustering are also utilised by DRP

UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), Anti Virus Software, Fire

Alarms, Fire Extinguishers etc are also considered in the DRP

IS THERE A PERFECT DRP?

There is no perfect Disaster Recovery Plan as such. It is difficult to predict disasters and to estimate the extent of their impact. The best that an organization can hope for is to have a flexible BCP & DRP in place so that most of the major risks are mitigated and business goes on without pause.

B.C.P. PROCESS
