Directing: Meaning :- Directing is an active element which initiates action to translate decisions into productive activities.

Directing is influencing people's behavior through motivation, communication, group dynamics, leadership and discipline. Directing is a managerial function which deals with instructing people to do work in the right manner.

Definition: Directing consists of the process and techniques utilized in issuing instructions and making certain that operations are carried on as originally planned . ---- Haimann Directing is the real guidance, the inspiration, the leadership of those people that constitute the real core of responsibilities of management. ---- Earnent Dole

Characteristics of directing:Directing is a :1. Continuous process- it exists as long as the organization is active 2. Focuses on goals- it emphasizes on achieving goals 3. Creative activity- it is creative, dynamic and innovative 4. Individual approach- it is interpersonal.

Characteristics of directing:5. Psychological factor- it involves feelings and emotions. 6. Linking function- it acts as a link . 7. Chain of command- it flows from top level to the bottom level. 8. Facilitates co-ordination- it involves co-ordination of activities.

Importance of directing:Directing is one of the most important functions in management. It is important in the following ways. 1. Facilitates innovation- it facilitates innovation by proper direction. 2. Corporate image- it helps to develop corporate image. 3. Team spirit- it facilitates team sprit amongst the employees. 4. Optimum use of resources- it helps to utilize resources to the maximum.

Importance of directing:5. Motivation- it motivates employees to take more interest and initiative in the work. 6. Facilitates change- facilitates changes to improve the efficiency of the organization. 7. Reduces absenteeism- reduces labour turnover and absenteeism. 8. Higher efficiency- raises the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.

Elements of directing:The elements of directing involves:1. Assignment giving- deals with assigning work to employees. 2. Good listener- it involves listening on the part of the manager. 3. Effective conference leading- it involves planned and effective conferences. 4. Effective communication- it involves effective communication to the subordinates.

Steps in directing :The following are the steps in planning:1. Directing objectives- related to making understand the goals. 2. Harmony of objectives- which involves avoiding conflicts. 3. Unity of command- it relates to the central source of command. 4. Direct supervision- involves maintaining direct contact with employees.

Steps in directing:5. Unity of direction- which emphasizes on giving a sense of direction. 6. Democratic process- which acts as a guidance for improvements. 7. Comprehension- which is the extent of understanding of the employees. 8. Follow up- which is watching over the work assigned.

Conclusion: It is mistakenly believed that directing is unnecessary in an organization of professional peers. However, the directing function must be performed even in an organization consisting entirely of professionals. Successful performance of the directing function is essential to the success of any department because the managements directing function includes those management actions that cause employees to work and toward achieving the goals and objectives .
