What Is the Internet?

university and private computers together and providing an infrastructure for the use of E-mail, hypertext documents, databases and other computational resources

Intranets
An intranet is a private computer network that uses

Internet Protocol technologies to securely share any part of an organization's information or operational systems within that organization.
Sometimes the term refers only to the organization's

internal website, but may be a more extensive part of the organization's information technology infrastructure.

Extranets
An extranet is a private network that uses Internet

protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses.
An extranet can be viewed as part of a company's

intranet that is extended to users outside the company, usually via the Internet.

World Wide Web


The World Wide Web is a system of interlinked

hypertext documents contained on the Internet.


The World Wide Web is a subset of the internet that

uses computers called web servers to store multimedia files.


These multimedia files are called web pages that are

stored at locations known as web sites.


HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language) is the

standard document formatting language for web pages.


With a web browser, one can view web pages that

may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them using hyperlinks.

Static Web Pages: pages in which the information

displayed by the browser is not subjected to manipulation by user. Thus, the web page content remain the same until the page is manually edited at the server level.
Dynamic Web Pages : pages in which end user

decides what information is displayed by the browser at run time. Thus, the web page content is automatically created and tailored to end users need, each time the end user requests the page.

Advantages of Web Databases


Good and user friendly graphical user Interface
HTML is used by both developers and end-users,

which is simple and easy to use language.


Platform independent

since databases can be accessed from any platform using the browser.

The network access is transparent. Web enables organizations to provide new and

innovative services to the users speedily.

Disadvantages of Web Databases


The communication medium is slow.
The internet is not much reliable. The security is a major concern. The cost of meeting the demands and expectations

of customers is high.
The functionality of the HTML is limited. Scalability is a problem.
