CCP-105.18 1
Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be
able to know:

 Dot matrix Printer

 Letter quality Printer

 Laser Printer and

 Color printers

CCP-105.18 2
RECAP
 Punch Cards & Paper Tapes
 Oldest & cheapest input/output device
 Touch Screen
 Allows the user to operate a computer by
simply touching the display screen
 Joystick
 Used to move the cursor or other objects
on the VDU
 Light Pen
 Light sensor device to select objects on a
display screen CCP-105.18 3
Printer
 It is used to create a hard copy paper of the
files stored in a computer

 There are two basic qualities associated

with printers:

 Resolution
 Print speed

CCP-105.18 4
Printers

 Definition:-

 A program and /or results of a program or

document from a computer can be provided on a
sheet of paper in a readable form using the
device known as Printer

CCP-105.18 5
 The speed of the printer is measured by pages
per minute (ppm) or by lines per minute (lpm) or
by characters per second (cps)

 Print resolution is measured as the number of

dots per inch (dpi)

CCP-105.18 6
Printers are classified as:-

 (i) Impact printers

 An impact printer uses some types of hammers

to “impact” the ribbon and the paper, much like
a typewriter does

 (ii) Non-impact printers

 Non impact printers use chemicals, lasers and

heat to form the images on the paper

CCP-105.18 7
Serial Printers (impact printers)

 A serial printer prints one character at a time

 It is similar to a typewriter. Printers can be operated

using continuous fan fold paper or separate sheets

 It is much slower than a line printer and is less

costly

CCP-105.18 8
 One category of impact serial printers is based on
Dot Matrix and Daisy-Wheel technology

 Non-impact serial printers employ ink-jet and

thermal technology

 Regardless of the technology, the images are

formed one character at a time as the print head
moves across the paper

CCP-105.18 9
DOT MATRIX PRINTER

CCP-105.18 10
Dot Matrix Printer
 Dot matrix printer is the most common types of
printer in use. It prints character by character
 It prints out each letter or digit in the form of a
group of dots . That is why the printer is called a
dot matrix printer
 The print quality of this printer is not very fine
and dot matrix printers are slow

CCP-105.18 11
Dot Matrix Printer
 The print head comprises a matrix of tiny
needles, usually seven rows and five columns
 Normally they can print at a speed of up to about
360 characters per second
 Each character is formed in a 7*5 matrix as the
print head moves across the paper

CCP-105.18 12
Letter Quality Printers

 The character produced by a dot matrix printer is

made up of a finite number of dots made by tiny
needles
 To print better looking output a serial printer
known as the Daisy Wheel Printer is used

CCP-105.18 13
Daisy Wheel Printer
 A Daisy Wheel Printer is so called because the
print head consists of a daisy shaped wheel
which holds all the characters
 The print head moves along the line and stops
where a character is to be printed
 The character selected is brought to the print
position by the rotation of the daisy wheel

CCP-105.18 14
Daisy Wheel Printer
 A hammer which is held at the print position
strikes the character to print
 The advantage of this letter quality printer is the
excellent quality of the print can be produced by it

CCP-105.18 15
Advantages of Daisy Wheel Printer

 Instead of using ribbon, ink is forced out of tiny

holes directly on the paper to form images or
characters
 Their prices are higher than dot matrix printers
 The print quality of the Ink-Jet printer is not as
good as the laser printer

CCP-105.18 16
Line Printers

 Line printers are impact printers that print the

entire line at a time
 They produce huge volumes of output per a unit
of time
 A line printer can have 80,100,120,or 132 print
positions

CCP-105.18 17
Line Printers

 Once a line is printed, the paper is moved so that

the next line can be printed
 The gap between the lines can be changed by
giving the appropriate command in the program

CCP-105.18 18
Line Printers

 The speed of the line printer is measured by the

number of lines it can print in one minute
 The disadvantage with the line printer is that
they do not support graphics

CCP-105.18 19
Page Printers (Non-Impact printers)

 Page printers are of the non impact type and use

electro photographic printing technology to achieve
high speed hard copy output by printing a page at
a time
 Example :- Laser Printer
 These printers are used in large banks, insurance
companies, etc

CCP-105.18 20
Laser Printer (Color)

Laser Printer
CCP-105.18 21
Ink-Jet Printers

 Ink-Jet printers use electrostatic ink in it

 The printer head is a specially designed

nozzle. These printers use a technology
similar to that of dot matrix printer

 However, instead of pins in the print head,

there are several microscopic holes

CCP-105.18 22
Laser Printer

 Laser printer prints one page at a time

 It uses a laser beam to produce the image. Laser
printers are rated in pages per minute
 It produce very good quality output. The cost of
the laser printer is very high compared to other
printers

CCP-105.18 23
Laser Printers
 These are superior
 They are very fast , easy to use and produce high
quality output
 Laser printers operate at a speed of 8 to12 pages
per minute
 These printers are used for fast printing in desk-top
publishing (DTP) systems

CCP-105.18 24
