CCP303.25 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to:
 Calculate Weighted Arithmetic Mean

CCP303.25 2
Recap

Individual Series
 A.M.- Direct method = ∑X/N
- Short-cut Method = A + ∑d/N
Discrete Series
 A.M. - Direct Method = ∑fX/N
- Short-cut Method = A + ∑fd/N

CCP303.25 3
Recap contd..

Continuous Series
 A.M. - Direct method = ∑fm/N

- Short-cut method = A + ∑fd/N

- Step Deviation method = A + ∑fdx/N

CCP303.25 4
Weighted Arithmetic Mean

 Relative importance will be given to all the

items
 The term weight stands for the relative
importance of the different items

CCP303.25 5
Formula
Xw = ∑wx
∑w
Where Xw = Weighted arithmetic mean
x = variable
w = weight
∑wx = Total of the product of weights and variables
∑w = Total of weights

CCP303.25 6
Calculation of Weighted Arithmetic Mean

Steps:
 Multiply the weights by the variable x
 Obtain the total i.e. ∑wx
 Divide this total by the sum of weights i.e., ∑w to
obtain the exact weighted arithmetic mean

CCP303.25 7
Example 1:

Calculate weighted arithmetic average from

the following data:

Designation Monthly salary Strength of the cadre

(in Rs.)
Class I officers 1500 10
Class II officers 800 20
Subordinate staff 500 70
Clerical staff 250 100
Lower staff 100 150

CCP303.25 8
Solution

Calculation of weighted Arithmetic Mean weightage

Designation Monthly salary in Strength of the Wx

Rs. (x) cadre (w)
Class I officers 1500 10 15000
Class II officers 800 20 16000
Subordinate staff 500 70 35000
Clerical staff 250 100 25000
Lower staff 100 150 15000

∑w = 350 ∑wx = 106000

CCP303.25 9
Solution contd..
Xw = ∑wx
∑w
Here ∑wx = 106000, ∑w = 350, then
Weighted Arithmetic Mean = 106000/350
= 302.86
Weighted Arithmetic Mean = Rs. 302.86

CCP303.25 10
Typical Problems - Arithmetic Mean

1. From the following data compute mean marks

of all the students of 50 schools in a city:

Marks obtained No. of schools Average No. of

students in a school
More than 35 7 200
30-35 10 250
25-30 15 300
20-25 9 200
15-20 5 150
Less than 15 4 100

CCP303.25 11
Solution
 First rewrite the given data in ascending order
and then calculate the mean
A=27.5
CALCULATION OF MEAN MARKS C=5

Marks No. of Average No. Total No. of m.p. dx = (m- fdx

(1) schools of students students m 27.5)/5
(2) (3) (2 x 3)
10-15 4 100 400 12.5 -3 -1200
15-20 5 150 750 17.5 -2 -1500
20-25 9 200 1800 22.5 -1 -1800
25-30 15 300 4500 27.5 0 0
30-35 10 250 2500 32.5 +1 +2500
35-40 7 200 1400 37.5 +2 +2800
N=11350 ∑fdx=+800

CCP303.25 12
Solution contd..

Arithmetic Mean = A + ∑fdx X c

N
A = 27.5, ∑fdx = 800, N = 11350, c = 5, then,
Arithmetic Mean = 27.5 + 800 x5
11350
= 27.5 + 4000/11350
= 27.5 +0.35
= 27.85
Arithmetic Mean = 27.85 marks

Illustration - 2
A market with 187 firms has the following
distribution of average number of workers in
various income groups. Find the average
salary paid in the whole market.

Income-groups No. of firms Average No. of

workers
150-300 40 8
300-500 32 12
500-800 39 5
800-1200 34 7
1200-1800 42 4

CCP303.25 14
Solution
Hint: Obtain frequencies by multiplying
number of firms with average no. of workers:
CALCULATION OF AVERAGE SALARY PAID Mid point

Income group No. of Average Total No. of m.p. Fm

(1) firms No. of workers M (4x5
(2) workers (2x3) (5) (6)
(3) (4)f

150-300 40 8 320 225 72000

300-500 32 12 384 400 153600
500-800 39 5 195 650 126750
800-1200 34 7 238 1000 238000
1200-1500 42 4 168 1500 252000
N=1305 ∑fm=842350
CCP303.25 15
Solution contd..
Arithmetic Mean = ∑fm
N
here N = 1305, ∑fm = 842350, then
Arithmetic Mean = 842350/1305
= 645.48
Average Salary = Rs. 645.48
