EC105.1 1
Objectives
On completion of this class you should be able to
understand the

• Meaning of Resistance

EC105.1 2
Name Some Electrical Gadgets

• Bulb
• Fan
• Refrigerator
• Telephone
• Computer

EC105.1 3
Some Electrical Gadgets

Fig. 1 Electrical Gadgets

EC105.1 4
1.What they require for working?

Electricity or Current.

2. What is Current?

Flow of electrons constitute Current.

EC105.1 5
1.What do we do when somebody says
‘Sun rises in the West?’
We oppose it.

2.What do we do when somebody tries to steal

something from us?
We oppose or Resist it.

3.How do we generally react to a change in a system?

We oppose or Resist it.

EC105.1 6
RESISTORS
1. What is a Resistor?

A basic Electronic Component.

2. What it does?

It opposes the flow of current..

Resistance:

The property of Resistor to oppose the flow of current.

EC105.1 7
We use Resistors commonly

• To limit current in a circuit

• To get required voltage drop

• As a load element

EC105.1 8
Units of basic Electrical
Parameters

• Resistance is measured in Ohms

(Ω)

• Current is measured in Amperes

(A)

• Voltage is measured in Volts (V)

EC105.1 9
Resistor is represented by the
letter ‘R’

Symbol of Resistor

1 2

EC105.1 10
When a Voltage(V) is applied across a Resistor.

( R ), Current (I) flows through it

• Lower the value of Resistance, lower the

opposition, so

higher the current.

• Higher the Resistance, lower the current 0.

EC105.1 11
So Resistance is inversely proportional to
Current.

Mathematically

R α 1/ I or R= V / I

If V = 1 Volt, I = 1 Amp, then

R = 1 Volt / 1 Amp = 1 Ohm

EC105.1 12
Summa
ry
• Every material in the Nature offer opposition to the
flow of Current.

• This opposition is called Resistance.

• Higher the opposition, lower the current and vice-

versa .

• The unit of Resistance is Ohm (Ω).
