EC303.26 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period, you would be able to

• solve for mesh current equations for the

given network having independent sources

EC303.26 2
EXAMPLE 1

Mesh analysis in a network with independent source

mesh1 mesh2 mesh3

fig1

This network contains a current source in mesh2.

so mesh current I2 = Is = 2A.

EC303.26 3
KVL for mesh1 is

Vs1 = ( 2+4 )I1 - 4 I2 - 0( I3 )

(or) 10 = 6 I1 – 8

(or) I1 = 3 A.

KVL for mesh3 is

Vs2 = ( 0 )I1 - 3 I2 + (3+2) I3

(or) I3 = 2.8 A.

EC303.26 4
EXAMPLE 2

Using mesh analysis , determine the current in the network

shown below.

fig2

This circuit contains 4A current source in parallel

with 0.5 ohms resistance.

EC303.26 5
By source transformation

converted as

EC303.26 6
Then the circuit becomes

Assuming I1,I2,I3 as the

mesh currents as in the figure

EC303.26 7
KVL for mesh1:

I1 (0.5)+(I1+I3)1+(I1-I2)+2-2 =0

(or) 2.5 I1 - 0.5 I2 + I3 = 0 ---- (1)

mesh3
KVL for mesh2:
mesh1 mesh2

0.5(I2-I1)+1(I2+I3)+1(I2)-2 = 0

(or)-0.5 I1 + 2.5 I2 + I3 = 2 ----- (2)

KVL for mesh3:

2I3+1(I1+I3)+1(I2+I3) = 0

(or) I1 + I2 +4 I3 = 2 ----- (3)

EC303.26 8
In matrix form

I1 0
2.5 -0.5 1
= 2
-0.5 2.5 1 I2
0
1 1 4 I3

i.e. Z I = V

EC303.26 9
Where 2.5 -0.5 1

-0.5 2.5 1
Z =
1 1 4

I1

I = I2

I3

2
V=
0

EC303.26 10
To get current I , we have to solve for I1,I2 as current i = I1+I2.

0 -0.5 1
By using crammers' rule
2 2.5 1

0 1 4
I1 =
2.5 -0.5 1

-0.5 2.5 1

1 1 4

= 6 = 0.33 A
18

EC303.26 11
0 -0.5 1

2 2.5 1

0 1 4
I2 = = - 0.33 A
2.5 -0.5 1

-0.5 2.5 1

1 1 4

Then i = I1+I2 = 0

EC303.26 12
EXAMPLE3

Find current through the inductor in the network

shown below using mesh current analysis.

fig3

Let I1, I2, I3 be the currents flowing in the mesh1, mesh2,

and mesh3 respectively.

EC303.26 13
In mesh1 : current I1 = 5 amp. ------ (1)

------- (2)

KVL for mesh2 : -4 I1 +(4+j3) I2 + j2 I3 = 0 ------- (3)

Substituting the value of I1 and I3 from (1) and (2) in (3)

We will get

Or I2 = 3.056 – j 3.591
