EC304 .61 to 62 1
OBJECTIVES

On the completion of this period,

you would be able to know
 What is static RAM?

 What is dynamic RAM?

 Working of dynamic RAM.

 Differences between static and dynamic RAM

EC304 .61 to 62 2
RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)

 A random access memory (RAM) or a read-write memory

(RWM) is a group of registers

 Each register is identified by unique binary address

 With the help of address, the data can be read from or write
into the memory location.

RAM(RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY)

Dynamic RAM Static RAM

 Static memory: The content in this memory is retained

as long as power is available
 Dynamic memory:
The content is retained for a very short period of time.
It needs periodical refreshment of its content

DYANAMIC RAM(DRAM)
INTRODUCTION
 Dynamic RAM stores data in form of charge in
capacitor.
 When capacitor is charged to a “HIGH” voltage,
the DRAM cell stores “1” state.
 When capacitor is charged to a”LOW”voltage, the
DRAM cell stores a “0” state.
 The packaging density is very high.
 It uses one MOSFET and one capacitor

EC304 .61 to 62 6
OPERATION PRINCIPLE OF DRAM

Write: When WL is selected

 If the BL is 0, the MOSFET is in OFF state and
capacitor does not charge and its voltage is zero (0)

If the BL is 1, the MOSFET is in ON state and

capacitor charges and its voltage is High(1)
Read: When WL is selected, the potential across the
capacitor appears at Bit Line.
If the voltage across capacitor is high, the output is
‘1’
If the voltage across capacitor is zero, the output
is ‘0’

COMPARISION BETWEEN STATIC AND
DYNAMIC RAM CELLS

EC304 .61 to 62 8
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
DYNAMIC RAM OVER STATIC RAM
Advantages:

1. It consumes less power because the dynamic RAM’s require

power only at the time of writing data and replenishing it.

2. Consumes less power because the data stored

in the form of charge.

3. Cost is less because it requires less number of transistors.

4. Higher packing density as the number of transistors

required is lesser.
EC304 .61 to 62 9
Disadvantages:

 The charge across the capacitor in the dynamic

RAM is likely to decrease with time.
 The memory cells should be refreshed at regular
intervals to retain stored data properly.
 Therefore the system complexity is more.
