THE REAL NUMBER SYSTEM

The real number system evolved over time by expanding the notion of what we mean by the word number. At first, number meant something you could count, like how many sheep a farmer owns. These are called the natural numbers, or sometimes the counting numbers.

Natural Numbers or Counting Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . .

Whole Numbers Natural Numbers together with zero 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . . Integers Whole numbers plus negatives . . . 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, . . . Rational Numbers All numbers of the form a/b , where a and b are integers (but b cannot be zero) Irrational Numbers Cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers. As decimals they never repeat or terminate (rationals always do one or the other).

SET OF REAL NUMBERS

System of different numbers generated with set of natural numbers, set of integers, set of rational number and set of irrational numbers.

Each element in the universal set U has degree of membership, which is a real number between 0 and 1(including 0 and 1), in set S. Set S is donated by listing the elements with their degree of membership(element with 0 degree of membership are not listed). For instance, we write {0.6 Alice, 0.9 Brain, 0.4 Fred, 0.1 oscar, 0.5 Rita } for sets F(of famous people) to indicate that Alice has 0.6 degree of membership in F, Brain has a 0.9 degree of membership in F, Fred has a 0.4 degree of membership in set F, Oscar has a 0.1 degree of membership in F and Rita has a 0.5 degree of membership in F(so that Brain is the most famous and Oscar is the least famous peopleof these people). Also suppose that R is the set of rich people with R = {0.4 Alice, 0.8 Brian, 0.2 Fred, 0.9 Oscar, 0.7 Rita }.

a) The complement of set S is the set S with the

degree of the membership of the element is S equal to 1 minus the degree of the membership of this element is S.
b) Find F(the set of people who are not famous)

and R ( the set of people who not rich)

c) Find set F U R of rich or famous people d) Find the set of F R of rich or famous people.

ANSWER a) Formula = 1- F Alice = 1- 0.6 = 0.4 Brian = 1 0.9 = 0.1 Fred = 1 0.4 = 0.6 Oscar = 1 0.1 = 0.9 Rita = 1 0.5 = 0.5 . F = { 0.4 alice, 0.1 Brian, 0.6 Fred, 0.9 Oscar, 0.5 Rita } Formula = 1 R Alice = 1 0.4 = 0.6 Brian = 1 0.8 = 0.2 Fred = 1 0.2 = 0.8 Oscar = 1 0.9 = 0.1 Rita = 1 0.7 = 0.3 .. R = {Alice 0.6, Brian 0.2, Fred 0.8, Oscar 0.1, Rita 0.3 } b) F U R maximum of degree of membership of element F and R F U R ={ 0.6 Alice, 0.9 Brian, 0.4 Fred, 0.9 Oscar, 0.7 Rita } c) F R minimum of the degree of membership of the element in F and R

Question 2
In class of 120 students numbered 1 to 120, all even numbered students for Physics, whose numbers are divisible by 5 for Chemistry and whose number are divisible by 7 for Math. How many for none of the three subjects?

Question 2
P=physic C=chemistry M=mathematics Now, P U C U M = P + C + M ( P C + C M + M P) + ( P C M) P = 120/2 = 60 students C = 120/5 =24 students M =120/7 =17 The 10th, 20th, 30th no. of students opted for both P and C. Therefore, P C = 120/10 =12 The 14th, 28th, 42nd no. of students opted P and M Therefore, M P = 120/14 =8 The 35th, 70th no. of students opted for C and M. Therefore, C M =120/35 =3 And the 70th of students opted for all three subjects Therefore, P U C U M = 60 + 24 + 17 ( 12+8 +3) + 1 = 79 No. of students who opted for none of the three subjects = 120 79 =41

Question 3

In a college contains 600 student, 2/5 was the first year student, 1/3 was second year student, 1/5 was the third year student and repeater student who need to repeat their study before they can graduate. From this 600 student, 70 percent is female. Given that, 160 female student in first year, 90 female student in the third year and 25 male repeater student. a) How many the female repeater student? b) Find the percentage of the second year male student. c) Find the number of the first and second year male student.

Question 3 a) Student total 1st year 240 2/5 X 600 =240 2nd year 200 1/3 X 600 =200 3rd year 120 1/5 X 600 =120 Repeater 40
600-(240+200+120) =40

female 160

male 240-160=80

200-45=155

45

90

120-90=30

(40-25) = 15
70% X 600 =420

25
600-420 =180

Total 600
