ANDHRA PRADESH
Name :K.Suguna
Designation :Lecturer
Branch :Computer Engg
Institute :GPT, Anantapur
Year/Semester :III - Semester
Subject :Computer Architecture
Subject Code :CM-303
Topic :I/O Organization
Duration :50 mts
Sub Topic :Peripheral Devices & interface
Teaching Aids :ppt, Animations
CM303.51 1
Objective

On completion of this period , you would

be able to understand

• What is a peripheral device

• Need for the peripheral device
• classification of peripheral devices
• What is an interface
• Need for an interface

CM303.51 2
Peripheral Devices

These are the devices which have been

attached to the CPU

• They are electro mechanical & PU &

outside world

• With out the peripheral devices we can’t

interact with the system

CM303.51 3
Classification of peripheral devices

• Input devices
• Output devices
• Secondary storage devices

CM303.51 4
Input Devices

They accept data from the outside

world and translate it into a form the computer
understand

CM303.51 5
Input devices
Examples
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Joystick
• Light pen
• Digitizer

CM303.51 7
Output Devices
They accept data from the computer and
translate it into a form i. e acceptable to outside
world

CM303.51 8
Examples of Output Devices:
• Printer
• Plotter
• Monitor ( I/O Device)

CM303.51 11
Interface

Is used to connect and communicate

peripheral devices with processor

CM303.51 12
Need for an interface

The purpose of interface is to

resolve the differences between CPU and the
peripheral devices to supervise & synchronize

CM303.51 13
Differences between CPU & peripheral
devices

• Peripherals are electromechanical devices.

CPU is an electronic device
• Data transfer rate of peripherals are slower
than the CPU data transfer rate
• The operation of the peripherals must be
synchronized with the operation of CPU
• Data formats are different
CM303.51 14
I/O Bus and Interface Modules

I/O bus consists of

• Data lines

• Control lines

• Address lines

CM303.51 15
Each peripheral is associated with its
interface unit

• Decode address and control received

• Interrupts for the device

• Provide signals for device

• Synchronize and supervise data flow

CM303.51 16
I/O Bus and Interface Modules

• Each interface has own address

• Processor places address on

address lines

• Corresponding peripheral responds

while others are deactivated

CM303.51 17
I/O Bus and Interface Modules
• Same time processor provides function
code on control lines

• Interface executes function on peripheral

4 main command types

• Control commands, status, output data,

input data
