Diversity
All countries indigenous and do not share history or culture. Speak lots of different languages and dialects within them. Have different religious cultures and practices.

Developed different business practices based on diverse economic histories.

WORKPLACE ATMOSPHERE
Less emphasis on small talk and pleasantries.
Stick with social circles and small business groups

theyve known.
Compliments are sometimes received with suspicion if

they come from strangers.

It's often best to keep work and socializing separate,

unless the other person makes the offer.

Greetings & Etiquette

Very Formal. Less likely to address on first name basis unless

they have met several times.

Less emphasis on small talk and pleasantries. Use of the Title and family name even after years of business. The standard way to greet someone is with a handshake and eye

contact.
It is a business faux pas to refuse food and drink when offered.

WHAT TO WEAR???
Ladies generally wear skirts, jackets and scarves
Simple jewelry are acceptable for women Gents wear shirts and ties Black is always appropriate, also neutrals-beige, gray,

white, brown and blue

Try and have as many layers of clothes as possible

GENDER ROLES
Women accounts for large percentage of workforce
Women lag slightly behind men in education, salary

and status Men are chivalrous towards women Women greet associates with a handshake just as men do

Meetings
Although punctuality is valued in all countries, in

Eastern Europe it is imperative. There are exceptions. Eg. Russia. Hierarchy is very important. Seating is arranged to match the Position. It can be helpful to bring along a translator to be certain about the terms of your business deal.

Gifting
Odd number of flowers in a bouquet because even

numbers are given in mourning. Certain flowers--usually those associated with funerals--should not be given as gifts. e.g Carnations. When to open a gift Ukraine wait until later. Lithuania & Bulgaria soon as received.

BUSINESS SCENE
Eastern Europe should not be viewed as a single entity.
Broadly grouped into three tiers:
1. 2. 3.

Maturing markets Rising markets Developing markets

Traditional best countries may no longer be the best opportunities for business expansion.

COUNTRY CHARACTERISTICS
Sourcing Focus 1. A (relatively) large population & labor force 2. Reasonably low wages 3. An uneducated workforce for low-end manufacturing Sales Focus 1. A small population, which disqualifies many types of manufacturing 2. High levels of disposable income, & likewise relatively high labor costs

COUNTRY CHARACTERISTICS
Combined Focus 1. An educated workforce for high-end manufacturing and R&D 2. A large population 3. High levels of disposable income 4. Medium to high wages 5. Developed infrastructure 6. Transparent or improving government conditions

DEVELOPMENT PATTERN
Ripe for growth
Entering the EU Evolving into developing countries

Emerging opportunities

People talk about Eastern Europe as if it were a homogenous set of countries. The only thing that unites it as a region, besides geography, is many countries fast growth.
