The World Food Prize


• International award recognizing individual
achievements in human development
• Improves quality, quantity, and availability of
food world wide
• Created in 1986 by Dr. Norman Borlaug
• Award recognizes contributions in all fields
involving the world’s food supply

• It is said, “Dr. Borlaug saved more lives than any
other person that ever lived.”
The Youth Institute
• In October of each year students are allowed or
accepted to attend the World Food Prize Youth
Institute
• Students have the opportunity to meet Nobel and
World Food Prize Laureates and experts from across
the globe relating to food security
• The Institute lasts for three days
• One student can attend from each school in Iowa
• Each student has to write a paper on the present
year's topic for the Institute

World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony
World Food Prize founder and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug is escorted

The 2007 Laureate Award Ceremony was attended
by over 700 guests representing more than 60 countries
Twin violinists Wagner and Walter Caldas of Brazil peformed at the 2007 Laureate
Award Ceremony. The twins also performed at the 2006 Ceremony. That performance
ultimately led to a music scholarship at the University of Northern Iowa
Dr. Philip Nelson was honored as the 2007 World Food Prize Laureate.
In a surprise performance, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club
paid tribute to a former member, 2007 Laureate Philip Nelson.
2007 World Food Prize Laureate Dr. Philip Nelson is joined by his wife Sue and
Purdue Musical Organizations director Brian Breed in leading the crowd in singing
"Hail Purdue."
2007 Laureate:
Dr. Philip E. Nelson
• Born in 1934
• Grew up on a 500-acre farm
near Morristown, Indiana
• Earned his Ph. D. at Purdue
in 1967
• Developed system to protect
foods from perishing
• Successfully brought
together several crucial
aspects of the aseptic
processing system that
saved many lives
Life Changing Experiences
• Learned a lot of things about food
security, the world's food supply, and
about other people from different
cultures
• Learned how to better the life of others
• Learned that you do not have to be
openly involved in agriculture to help
people
• Learned that people in other places in
the world are suffering more than I am
and I should do my best to help them
