The Philippines (i/ f l pi nz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ p l pin s]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a country in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies between the country and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Seaseparates it from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural resources and made it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands, the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila.

The region is the second most heavily populated region in 2002, and located at the south and east of Metro Manila at the southwestern part of Luzon. Calabarzon is considered as prime region of the Philippines due to its nearness to the National Capital Region. Climate & Temperature November to April are dry season months. The rest of the month is considered as wet or rainy season.

Calamba: (Filipino: Kabite) Laguna : The province acquired its name from the Spanish word lago, which means lake or lagoon Batangas: Poetically, Batangas is often referred to by its ancient name Kumintang. Later, the Spaniards went to settle the present day Balayan, then the most progressive town of the Province. The name of the Province was changed into Bonbon. The term "batangan" refers to a type of raft people used to fish in the nearby Taal Lake. It was derived from the word "batang," a native term for the numerous logs found in the Calumpang River, the body of water that runs through the northeastern portion of the town and assumes the shape of a tuning fork. Rizal: The province was named after the country's national hero, Jos Rizal. Rizal's capital is Antipolo City, Cavite: Cavite got its name from a Tagalog word kawit (which means hook) owing to the hook-shaped land on the Old Spanish map. The land was formerly known as "Tangway" where Spanish authorities constructed a fort from which the city of Cavite rose. Quezon: After the war, on September 7, 1946, Republic Act No. 14 changed the name Tayabas to Quezon, in honor of Manuel L. Quezon, the Commonwealth president who hailed from Baler, which was one of the province's towns.

Region IV-A had a very important role in the history of the Philippines. Philippine independence was held by the first Philippine president, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, in on June 12, 1898. The eight primary rays of the sun found in the Philippine Flag represent the first eight provinces (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac) that sought independence from Spain and were placed under martial law by the Spaniards at the start of the Philippine Revolution in 1896.

CALABARZON and MIMAROPA were previously combined together as Southern Tagalog, until they were separated in 2002. Executive Order No. 246, dated October 28, 2003, designated Calamba City as the regional center of CALABARZON. The largest city of CALABARZON Region and the second highly-urbanized city is Antipolo City. Lucena City is the first highly-urbanized city in this region. While the largest metropolis in the region is Laguna West Metropolitan.

The region provide as the urban industrial extension area of Metro Manila. The main living source for the region is agriculture, fishing, farming, weaving and other types of livelihood. Most of the regions means of livelihood is agriculture, fishing, farming, weaving, The region is a well developed area with infrastructure and industrial product which manufactured and produces oriented product for export like textile, consumer electronic and garments.

Products
The main agricultural products of Calabarzon are coconut, pineapple, coffee, sugar, fruits and vegetables, cattle, poultry and other livestock. Agro-Industrial companies in this area are Monterey, San Miguel, Purefoods Hormel, KLT Fruits and others. The main industrial products of Calabarzon are garments, roofing sheets, electronics, steel, chemicals and processed agricultural products like pineapple juice, mango puree and processed meats. Philmetal and Philsteel are operating in calabarzon. Quezon Province is the country's leading producer of coconut products such as coconut oil and copra. A large part of the province is covered in coconut plantations. Fishing is also a large part of the province's economy.

Tourist Attractions

Calamba City is known as the Resort Capital of the Philippines because of the resorts and hot springs located at the City. The Canlubang Golf and Country Club, site of many Philippine Opens.

Laguna is also famous among tourists for the Pagsanjan Falls, the University of the Philippines campus and the hot spring resorts in Los Baos and Calamba City, on the slopes of Mount Makiling, Pila Town Plaza, Taytay Falls, Majayjay, the wood carvings and papier mache created by the people of Paet, the turumba of Pakil, the Seven Lakes of San Pablo City (San Pablo City is the first city in the province), Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan. Laguna province has some fantastic freshwater lakes, rivers and spectacular waterfalls. In particular, a must see is the Pagsanjan Falls, the falls have become a bit notorious for the boatman overcharging and being a bit unreasonable, but if you put it all in perspective the visit is worth it.

Natural Pagsanjan Falls, Cavinti - These falls used to be called the Magdapio Falls but have become popularly known as the Pagsanjan Falls because the trip starts in Pagsanjan. The falls are actually located upstream in Cavinti and not in Pagsanjan as many think. The boat ride goes through many rapids before reaching the falls. Laguna de Bay (Filipino: Lawa ng Bay; English: Lake of Bay) is the largest lake in the Philippines and the third largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia (in terms of surface area) after Tonle Sap in Cambodia and Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is on the island of Luzon between the provinces of Laguna to the south and Rizal to the north. Metro Manila lies on its western shore. Its surface area is 949 square kilometers and has an average depth of only about 2 meters. The lake is shaped like a stylised 'W', with two peninsulas jutting out from the northern shore. Between these peninsulas, the middle lobe fills a large volcanic caldera. Laguna de Bay drains to Manila Bay via the Pasig River. The lake is one of the primary sources of freshwater fish in the country.

Batangas
The province has many beaches and is famous for excellent diving spots including Anilao in Mabini, Matabungkay in Lian, Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Calatagan and Laiya in San Juan. Batangas is also where Taal Volcano, one of the Decade Volcanoes is located. Anilao, a world class diving spot with lovely beaches.

Cavite
Aguinaldo Shrine The house was built in 1845 and probably enlarged or improved in 1849 and in 1920. It is from its porch where Philippine independence from Spain was proclaimed in 12 June 1898. The Americans thought otherwise and colonized the Philippines before finally granting its own version of independence on 4 July 1946. President Diosdado Macapagal later restored June 12 as the Philippine Independence Day celebration and relegated July 4 as Filipino-American Friendship Day. General Aguinaldo's house was declared a national shrine shortly after his death in 1964. Cavite is famous for the island of Corregidor, from World War II, which is proudly part of the province.

Street dancers, musicians and other performers gather at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite this morning to commemorate the 111th anniversary of Philippine independence. The flag raising ceremony, Independence Day parade and the re-enactment of Cavite's role in the revolution was part of Kalayaan Festival 2009.

Quezon
Mt. Banahaw A major tourism draw of the province is the famed Mt. Banahaw. The mountain is surrounded by spiritual mysticism. Many cults and religious organizations stay in the mountains and numerous Christians visit the mountain during Holy Week.

Rizal
Hinulugang Taktak Rizal is a mountainous province perched on the western slopes of the southern portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range. Antipolo City boasts of a wonderful view of Metro Manila and it is where Hinulugang Taktak, a waterfall popular with tourists, can be found. It has fantastic views of the Sierra Madre Mountain ranges and Laguna de Bay.
