INTRODUCTION OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Meaning
Non-Verbal Communication is that communication which takes place other than words . NonVerbal Communication occurs mainly through Visual symbols and auditory symbols . Example :- Body Language , Voice qualities in speech , charts , diagrams , clothing and accessories.

DEFINITIONS
Behavior and elements of speech aside from the words themselves that transmit meaning. Non-verbal communication includes pitch, speed, tone and volume of voice, gestures and facial expressions, body posture, stance, and proximity to the listener, eye movements and contact, and dress and appearance. Research suggests that only 7percent effect is produced by the spoken word, 38 percent by the tone, inflexion, and other elements of voice, and 55 percent by body language, movements, eye contact, etc.

WHY IS NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT?

Basically, it is one of the key aspects of communication. It has multiple functions: Used to repeat the verbal message (e.g. point in a direction while stating directions.) Often used to accent a verbal message. (e.g. verbal tone indicates the actual meaning of the specific words). Often complement the verbal message but also may contradict. E.g.: a nod reinforces a positive message ; a wink may contradict a stated positive message.

Regulate interactions (non-verbal cues covey when the other person should speak or not speak). May substitute for the verbal message (especially if it is blocked by noise, interruption, etc) i.e. gestures (finger to lips to indicate need for quiet), facial expressions (i.e. a nod instead of a yes). Note the implications of the proverb: Actions speak louder than words. In essence, this underscores the importance of non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is especially significant in intercultural situations.

METHODS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

SIGN LANGUAGE The use of sign language is not, as you might think, restricted to people who have hearing disabilities. Even for hearing enabled people, sign language is a natural extension, or type of non-verbal communication.

COLOUR

Color symbolism is the use of color to represent traditional, cultural, or religious ideas, concepts, or feelings or to evoke physical reactions. Choosing colors based on symbolism or color meanings can apply to everything from clothing to wall paint to home furnishings. In desktop publishing and design choosing color based on color meanings applies to print and electronic projects from logos to Web site backgrounds.

And unlike some forms of nonverbal communication, facial expressions are universal. The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust are the same across cultures.
