What is a verb ?

A VERB is word which says what a noun or pronoun does ( run,write,fall,study,ect.). It refers to an action or state. Every sentences must have verb.
Look at the sentences below. The ones on the left are wrong because they do not have verbs.

There are kinds of verbs.The verb either express an action or describe a state of being. The verb that express an action (e.g run,sleep,drink)is called an action verb, and the verb that express a state of being (e.g. is,are,seem,appear)is called a non-action verb.

ACTION VERBS 1. My cat always sleeps on the couch. 2. Tom is looking at you. 3. Susan has bought a car. 4. My children go to school by bus. 5. Fran will stay with her sister when she goes to Kuala Lumpur. 6. Tim will have finished his homework by the I arrive home. 7. Doris baked some cookies.

NON-ACTION VERBS 1. My cat is cute. 2. You look pretty in red. 3. The car is very expensive. 4. The bus is red. 5. Her sister is teacher. 6. Her name is Fay. 7. He seems bored.

Regular verb
Any verb which has an addition of -d, -ed or -ied for the past tense and past participle.

Tense
A verb can also indicate time.It is called the verb tense.The tense show when an action takes place.

Every day, often, usually, sometimes, always, rarely, seldom, hardly, every week

EXAMPLE
She studies. They study.

Simple Past

Auxiliary verb
A verb is sometimes made up of more than one word (compound verb), for example, has gone. Has is the auxiliary verb (helping verb) while gone is the main verb.Auxiliary verb are used with other verbs to express some grammatical function (to make question or to form tenses).

Sentences
He is reading a book. She has written a book. They will go home. We can play tennis. The man was sleeping.

To make a compound verb,you need to use a auxiliary verb together with main verb. Auxiliary must occur before a main verb. There are four types of auxiliary verbs: 1. 2. 3. 4. To be (is ,are,am,was,were) To have (has,have,had) Modals (will,shall,can,could,must,may,ect). To do (do,does,did)

The Auxiliary Have is used to form tenses.

Uses of the Modal Auxiliary


Example of modal auxiliary are can, could, may, must, will, and should .They cannot exist themselves. They have to be combined with verbs in the infinitive (base form) to form complete verbs. The complete verbs expresses a persons opinion or attitude.
