Googles ethical track record marred by lawsuits based on patent and copyright infringement and federal trade commission lawsuits. April 04, 2010 In an effort to address mounting criticism of the privacy issues surrounding Google Buzz, Google had to ask all Buzz users to confirm or change their privacy settings. Google admitted that they didnt get everything right, which had resulted in serious privacy tweaks within days of its launch. The updates were intended to prevent Buzz from connecting to Google Reader or Picasa Web Albums automatically which directly violated the users choice or option to protect their information from being shared publicly.

April 07, 2010 Google Books, although an admittedly noble project as Google has framed it, is also a long-suffering one. Attacked first by writers and publishers, the immense online library has now been the subject of a lawsuit brought by several professional photographers organizations. The suit relates to Googles illegal scanning of millions of books and other publications containing copyrighted images and displaying them to the public without regard to the rights of the visual creators. Google Books began as a secret project in 2002. Its goal was to digitally scan and publish searchable versions of every book in existence.

Google succeeded so much that Books begun to threaten the authors, publishers, photographers and illustrators, whose copyrighted work it gives out for free to online audiences. Five years ago, several authors, publishers and professional organizations filed a $125 million, class-action lawsuit against Google Books. After a long period of negotiation, during which Congress got involved, Google and the plaintiff groups reached a controversial settlement that would allow for parts of copyrighted books to remain online if the books were out of print. But visual artists were not included in this lawsuit and settlement, and the plaintiff groups in this new suit say they intend to bring not only Google Books but also Google Image Search under scrutiny.

Oracle announced August 12, 2010, that it has filed suit against Google for alleged patent and copyright infringement. The suit concerns intellectual property related to the Java programming language, which Oracle purchased through its acquisition of Sun Microsystems. In a press release, Oracle spokeswoman Karen Tillman said, In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracles Java-related intellectual property. Googles Android competes with Oracle Americas Java as an operating system software platform for cellular telephones and other mobile devices. Google has been aware of Suns patent portfolio, including the patents at issue, since the middle of this decade, Google also hired former Sun Java engineers. This shows clear signs of Google violation of patented material while infringing on trade secrecy policy when they hired former Sun Java engineers.
