Creation of a portfolio is one of the most important aspects for a fashion designer to make his presence felt . Portfolios are a means for the designer to communicate his ideas and concepts about fashion to the people. The portfolio determines the sale quotient of an individual's design. It is a presentation of the range of a designer's skills and his expertise in the field.

Designers work a year in advance In the spring, the studio works for the spring/summer of the following year Once a collection is finished, on to the next! Research Each collection is researched so that all the items in it complement each other, will be in style, and have the particular look for which the company is known for.
Predicting Trends A designers most difficult task is forecasting what will be in style for the coming years. To do this, they know the past trends and look at repeats. They also purchase HIGH priced trend magazines. Additionally they observe what succeeded with customers in the past.

The Collection
Theme A designer selects a theme that represents their collection. It can be a period in history, a foreign place, a range of colors, a type of fabric Designing After the groundwork is completed for the nature of the collection, the designer must decide how many and what types of garments should be included in the collection.
Usually, they have a three month period to design, produce and publicize the collection in time for their fashion show. Press and buyers get their first look at the collection at the show
Organizing A Portfolio
A fashion design portfolio is a very important tool for any designer. It should contain samplings of the best work done by a designer. The best way to build a great portfolio is to focus on the content. It should showcase the designers creativity , style, sketching ability, knowledge of how to use color ,textile understanding ,design development and problem solving skills.

Introductory page
Should say Something unique about the designer /company. Example: Personal logo Designers name Customer name Season Targeted area of the theme.
Customer profile
Create a customer image and biography that enables you to keep your designs on track and targeted to your customer.
Theme board
The basic building block/primary idea through which the designer gets impressed / inspired. Simply called as the inspiration board.
Mood board
Basically collages of items such as photographs, sketches, clippings, fabric swatches and color sample that present the mood/idea of your theme to your customer.
Color board
Colour is a vital element of any emerging fashion trend. Depending on the forecast, people draw inspiration from certain colours & set the tone for the line creation .Colour reflects the mood of the people. Avoid using more than 8 shades in a pallete.
Fabric board
This board extensively contains the swatches of the fabric selected for the design process. Fabrics are selected with care to suit season/occasion/market/price point. The swatches will demonstrate how the texture ,dimension and feeling of the selected fabric is.
Flat presentations
The outline or shape of a garment designed. Flat drawings are exactly that a garment sketch showing where the seams go, where the fastenings go and what type they are, and any other interesting detail.
Story board
Story board is a summary of your collections inspiration and theme. this board will usually consist of a full colour illustration of a fashion figure or figures (male or female) wearing the garments being showcased. You should include a sizeable swatch of the fabric chosen, clearly labeled. You should consider your storyboard to be a pictorial representation of your clothing in full colour, along with technical renderings of each garment individually.
Accessory board
The suitable accessories for the designed garment is highlighted in this board.
Photographic board.
This board includes the photograph of the finished product of your work. The total finished touch is got by including pictures of models wearing them.
In todays competitive fashion industry ,your portfolio is your sales tool. There is no one style of portfolio that remains standard forever. If you are not in fashion, you are nobody.
