MAINTENANCE PRACTICE OF ALL TYPES OF ISOLATORS, EARTH SWITCHES AND WAVE TRAPS

MANISH TIWARI MANAGER, BINA

ISOLATOR---PURPOSE
Used in no load conditions Mainly used for Isolation of important

equipment like Transformers, Reactors, CBs etc. It does not have making or breaking capacity Ratings are in continuous operating current and Voltage level It is used in addition to CBs

TYPE OF ISOLATORS BASED ON OPERATING MECHANISM

HCB Isolators Vertical Break Type

Double Break Isolators

Pantograph Isolators

Tandem Isolator

TYPE OF ISOLATORS BASED ON LOCATION OF USE

Line Isolator Bus Isolator Reactor Isolator

Transformer Isolator

TYPE OF ISOLATORS BASED ON E/S

Without Earthswitch (Used where earthing is not

required) With one Earthswitch (Commonly used for earthing the equipment for which Isolator has been provided) With two earth switch (Generally used for Bus earthing)

ISOLATOR OPERATION

ISOLATOR INTERLOCKS
If Isolator is closed, E/S should not close If E/S is closed Isolator should not close If CB is closed then Isolator should not operate If Bus E/S is connected none of Bus Isolators should

operate If selected on local, remote operation should not take place If bay (Main / Tie) is connected Line Isolators should not operate If Line Isolator is connected Line Reactor Isolator should not operate

CONTACT RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT

The measurement is taken at Isolator in closed

position. The Ohm Meter operates on the four wire measurement principle. To measure the contact resistance connect the respective leads and adjust the veri A.C. so that app. 100 amps current flow through the contacts. Value of contact resistance is directly displayed on the digital LED display screen. By using four terminal method, we can nullify the resistance of test leads if input impedance of measuring device (IC) is very high.

CONTACT RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT

Contact resistance of the main contacts indicates

wear out and misalignment of the main contacts. If the value of contact resistance exceeds the permissible limit i.e. 300 microohms ( Ref. DOC. NO: D-5-02-XX-01-02), this could result in overheating of the contacts. Therefore, the problem of high contact resistance should be attended immediately by making proper alignment of contacts or by replacing finger contacts.
