y Civil engineers design things. These might be roads,

buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, or water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in their designs, from the costs to making sure the structure will stay intact during bad weather. This is one of the oldest types of engineering.

y The best way to describe the life of a civil engineer is to

say that all their days are different. And don't forget that if you choose this career path, you are in for a lot of challenges, depending upon your specialty. Apart from this, you will enjoy constant learning for all your life. y Basically, you have a big project that you work on from day to day.

y Civil Engineers work in many different settings,

ranging from quiet, modern offices to job sites in remote areas. The majority of Civil Engineers spend most of their time working in the office. Some are required to work at remote sites where the environment can be very hot or very cold. They may travel frequently or relocate temporarily while working on a distant project. They may work with other professional and technical personnel on temporary project teams. Civil Engineers always seem to be in demand and can find work in their field all over the world.

y Real talk

Civil engineers are needed every where.

y In a fast growing city, with an increasing population,

civil engineers will be in high demand

y Techniciansy If you don't want to supervise or design airports or dams

but still want to work in the field, don't worry. Civil engineering technician jobs could be for you. Civil engineering technicians assist engineers or researchers with development, handling the technical aspects of civil engineering. For instance, civil engineering technicians set up equipment, perform experiments and collect information scientists and engineers need.

y Drafters
y Engineers hand their notes and other information to

drafters so they can make visual guidelines for the engineers or construction crews. Thus, their plans, blueprints and sketches are followed to complete the projects. They draw or create maps and sketches of pipelines, sewage systems or highways. Drafters prepare drawings by hand or use computer-aided design, or CADD, software. They rely on calculators, technical handbooks and computers to complete their blueprints or sketches.

y Inspectors
y Construction and building inspectors are employed by

city and county governments to ensure structures are safely constructed. They examine bridges, highways, and water and sewage systems and other projects to make sure they pass governmental codes and regulations. Inspectors are on construction sites at every stage of every project. For instance, inspectors assess the site in preliminary stages or before the projects begin. Inspectors are around before and after work--like the pouring of concrete--is done. Once the project is complete, inspectors return to the sites for final inspections

y Surveyors
y These jobs are not at the mall, and they have nothing to

do with telemarketing. In civil engineering, surveyors measure and map land, and their land descriptions are used on leases and deeds. They also use equipment to research former buildings on the land or collect data on precise land boundaries.

Average annual salary: $86,000

y The Labor Department predicts that job growth for

civil engineers will be about 24 percent over the next decade or so well above average. That's about 68,000 new jobs. y Civil Engineers will be needed to repair or replace existing roads, bridges, and other public structures. Additional opportunities exist within non-civil engineering firms such as management consulting or computer services firms y As long as population continues to increase and expand, civil engineers will be needed.

y Aspiring civil engineers generally begin their college

careers by enrolling in chemistry, physics and advanced mathematics courses. Some programs may include classes in computer-aided design (CAD) as part of the core requirements. Additionally, students may take courses in engineering statistics in order to develop their computational skills. Pre-major courses may also cover fundamental engineering principles and concepts

y After completing core course requirements, civil

engineering students delve into advanced topics, such as thermodynamics and structural analysis. Courses may include the completion of a design project, in which students assess structural integrity of materials. This may require the use of CAD programs to test their designs. y Most programs generally require students to complete laboratory courses in which they analyze substances ranging from soil to concrete. These courses help students identify basic properties of materials, as well as potential problems from using them.

y Mechanical , Structural, Architectural, etc y Basically any engineers that help in the process of

building a structure
