WIRELESS APPLICATION PROTOCOL

By, RashyNaaz

What is WAP ?

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an open, global specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices to easily access and interact with information and services instantly. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a technical standard for accessing information over a mobile wireless network. A WAP browser is a web browser for mobile devices such as mobile phones(called "cellular phones" in some countries) that uses the protocol.

Inception of WAP

In 1997, several companies organized an industry group called the WAP Forum. This group produces the WAP specification, a (long and detailed) series of technical documents that define standards for implementing wireless network applications. Hundreds of industry firms have given strong backing to the WAP Forum, so the technology should become widely adopted, and it is already well-hyped.

Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) allows a user to bring Internet content on their mobile phone. WAP's development began during the middle of the 1990's. During this period the two major manufactures; Nokia and Ericsson, were interested in providing such sophisticated technologies to gain a competitive advantage in the mobile information market. This competition resulted in various methods being implemented;

Nokia developed Narrow Band Sockets (NBS) and Tagged Text Mark-up Language (TTML) where as Ericsson developed Intelligent Terminal Transfer Protocol (ITTP). A third player was Unwired Planet's who developed Handheld Device Mark-up Language (HDML).

Operating systems that are compatible with WAP

Firstly, It is a communication and application protocol

Independent of OS
It can be built on any operating system including Palm OS, EPOC 32, Windows, FLEXOS, OS/9, Java OS, etc. It provides service interoperability even between different device families.

Why is Internet not enough? or actually ... "too much" ...

Wireless network

Which wireless networks does WAP work with?

WAP is designed to work with most wireless networks such as CDMA, GSM, PDC, PHS, TDMA, FLEX, ReFLEX, iDEN, TETRA, DECT, DataTAC, Mobitex and GPRS.

What type of devices will use WAP?

Handheld digital wireless devices such as mobile phones, pagers, twoway radios, smartphones and communicators -- from low-end to high-end.

Advantages & Limitations

On the equipment side, the wireless devices represent the ultimate constrained computing device with: Less powerful CPUs, Less memory (ROM and RAM) Restricted power consumption Smaller displays Different input devices (e.g., a phone keypad, voice input, etc.) and on the network side, wireless networks are constrained by Less bandwidth More latency Less connection stability Less predictable availability
