ENGINEERING PRACTICES
WATER REUSE AND RECYCLING
Factors considered:
Identification of water reuse opportunities Determination of the minimum water quality needed for the given use
factors continued Determination of how water can be transported to the new use Evaluation of water quality degradation resulting from the use Determination of treatment steps that might be required to prepare for the water recycling
AGRICULTURAL USERS
ENGINEERING PRACTICES
1. FIELD PRACTICES -techniques that keep water in the field, distribute water more efficiently across the field, or encourage the soil moisture e.g. Chiseling of extremely compacted soils; furrow diking to prevent runoff & leveling the land to distribute water more evenly
2. MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES - monitoring soil and water conditions and collecting information on water use and efficiency Mgt. Strategies: measuring rainfall, determining soil moisture, checking pumping plant efficiency and scheduling irrigation
3. SYSTEM MODIFICATION -making changes to an existing irrigation system or replacing an existing system with a new one (*require purchase of equipment) Typical system modifications: adding drop tubes to center pivot system, retrofitting a well with a smaller pump, installing surge irrigation, or constructing a tailwater recovery system
BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES
Behavior Changes in Agricultural water users can be applied to irrigation application rates and timing (may be without modifying existing equipment). e.g. Better Irrigation Scheduling and, Careful choice of irrigation application rates & timing
HOME USERS
ENGINEERING PRACTICES
Plumbing. Replacement of existing plumbing equipment that uses less water (Low-Flow Plumbing Fixtures) e.g. Low flush toilets, Faucet Aerators, pressure reducing valves, low flow showerheads Toilet displacement devices & Gray water use
BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES
Use of dishpan with water rather than running the water continuously Turning off faucet while brushing teeth, shaving or soaping Adjusting water level of washing machine to match the size of load Turning off hose in between rinses while washing the cars. Cover swimming pools while not in use Sweeping sidewalks instead of hosing
