Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

6th Grade Math Ms. Canfield

What Are They?

Fractions, decimals, and percents are all ways of saying THE SAME NUMBER!

We think of them as different things, but they are all RELATED!

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Where do you see percents ?

Weather- 30% chance of rain Stores- 25% off shoes Taxes, Tips Survey- 50% of people like vanilla ice cream

What is a percent?
Percent- means out of 100 Percents are usually between 0% and 100% (although there can be more than 100%)

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

To change a decimal to a percent, you move the decimal point two places to the right. (This is the same as multiplying the
decimal by 100)

Example: Change 0.125 from a decimal to a percent.

0. 1 2 5

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Sometimes, with a terminating decimal, it will not seem like there is anywhere for the decimal point to move. In this case, add zeroes to the end of the decimal.

Example: Change 0.4 into a percent.

0.4 0. 4 0 0 40%

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Change these decimals to percents by moving the decimal points two places to the right.

0.25 0.375 0.87 0.9

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Changing Percents back to Decimals

To change a percent back to a decimal, you need to move the decimal two places to the LEFT and remove the percent sign. Example:

3 7 . 5%

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

If the percent has no decimal point, add one after the number in the ones place.

Example: Convert 45% to a decimal.

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Convert these percents to decimals.

How

do you turn a decimal into a fraction?

Read the fraction to yourself. Its place value will tell you what number to put in the denominator (i.e. tenths will have a 10 in the denominator, etc.)

0.15 15/100 3/20

There

are two ways to change a fraction into a percent.

1. 2.

You can create an equivalent fraction out of 100. You can change the fraction to a decimal, and then change to a percent.

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

1.

Create an equivalent fraction out of 100.

2.

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

To convert a percent to a fraction, put the percentage in the numerator and 100 in the denominator. Then, plug the fraction into your calculator to find the simplest form.
Example: Convert 62% to a fraction. 62 = 31 100 50
