Introduction:
Cassia

is a genus of Fabaceae in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Commonly called cassias, "cassia" is also the English name of Cinnamomum aromaticum in the Lauraceae.

Distribution:

A common and indigenous tree occurring throughout India in deciduous forests. It is one of most wide spread of Indian trees, ascending up to 1200 mts. In Himalayas. The tree is scattered in mixed deciduous forests and occurs fairly frequently in soil forests.

Uses:
firewood: The wood is heavy having a specific gravity of about 0.79 and is found to be a good firewood. Calorific value of wood is 6803 kcals/kg. Other uses: The tree provides useful timber. the wood is heavy, more or less straight grained and medium coarse textured. The bark of this species known as Samari is used as a tenning material in a mixture with avaram bark. The tennin percentage varies from 10% to 12%. pods are used in local medicine. Medicinal (Bark, fruit and leaves) Ornamental tree.

Technique:
Nursery Technique: Sow the seeds in primary beds to a depth equal to the thickness of seeds. They are sown in polybags containing a rooting medium prepared by mixing equal quantities of sand, red earth and manure. Germination starts from 3rd day onwards. Germination in mother bed is good. It will grow 6 feet height in 6 months in 30 x 45 cm bag.

Viability: Seed can be kept in ripe pods up to one year. Germination percentage: 70%

Seed Treatment: Soaking in cold water for 24 hours or the
seeds treated with hot water and sulphuric acid show success rate of 75% and 35% respectively.

Cassia siamea
Family: Leguminoseae (saesalpinioideae) Common/Tamil Name: Ponavarai, Manjkonnai, Sinnakonnai. Seeds: The seeds of this species ripen in the months of March-April and there are 35,200-37,400 seeds /kg.

Distribution:

It is a native of South-East Asia and was introduced in India as an avenue tree. It is distributed throughout the Western Peninsula and planted as an avenue and garden tree.

Use as firewood: The wood of this species is dense with a specific gravity of 0.6 to 0.8. It is make excellent fuel wood, though it burns with smoke. Calorific Value of wood is 4500 Kcal.per Kg Other Uses: Fuel timber. Leaves and twigs are used as green manure. Tree is ornamental with yellow flowers.

Technique:
Nursery Technique: Treated seeds sown in mother bed starts to germinate after 15 days to 25 days. It will attain 8 feet height in six months in 30 x 45 cm size bags. Viability: Seeds stores well up to one year.

Germination percentage: 90% Seed Treatment: Keep in cool water for 24 hours.
