preform about twenty five to thirty five per
year in the Delaware valley

As of July 2004 over 400 procedures with

one or two lung transplantations involved
have taken place throughout the Penn
helath system

Before January 2000 the success rate for a

single or double lung transplant was about
38% survival rate

After January 2000 that success rate

jumped up to 74% survival rate
Life expectancy -

The life expectancy post transplant is
84% after one year
50% at five years
And 38% at 8 years
The longest expectancy is about ten
years, though some have lived longer
than that

 Procedure length

• The average lung transplant procedure 
takes about six hours but can last longer 
than that depending on complications 
that arise during surgery or 
complications prior to surgery that 
make it harder for the surgens and 
doctors to preform the procedure
COSTS OF PROCEDURE

An average lung transplant procedure

costs about $100,000 to $200,000

It depends on wehter it is double or single

transplant, time in hospital ICU( Intensice
Care Unit) and cost of medications after
procedure
lung removal

The costs are about the same as those of

the recipents.
The donor also has hospital costs and
medication to pay for
• The donor of a lung for single lung 
donation may be alive or brain dead to 
donate
• The donor for a double lung transplant 
must be brain dead in a ventilator 
• Lungs must be still functional to be 
accaptable for transplants
 Anti- Rejection
Drugs
• A new drug is being used as an inhaliant to help
with the body rejecting the new lung

• Cyclosporine is being tested and is proving to

improve the survival rate and reduce the
rejection of new lungs

• Cyclosporine is an inhaled drug that is helping to

combat organ rejection following transplant
• No smoking

• Limited physical activity

• No strenous activity

• Avoid being around smoke

Post operation therapy

Immunosuppressive therapy

6 to 12 week program of physical rehab

3 times a week aerobic excercise

heart rate and workload monitored

encouraged to maintain regular scedual of

aerobic exercise
