Difference between Interview & Questionnaire

INTERVIEW
Interviews involve verbal communication between the interviewer and the applicant, during which information is provided to the researcher. OBJECTIVE: To find the best person for the job

Collecting the data both extensively and intensively. Exchanging the data and also the experiences.

TYPES OF INTERVIEW
GUIDED OR DIRECTED INTERVIEW:
It measures the personality traits such as Self reliance, emotional stability, ability to get along with others, willingness to take responsibilities.

UNGUIDED OR NONDIRECTED INTERVIEW:


Used in situations other than employment e.g., counseling , handling grievances..etc.

METHOD OF INTERVIEW
Interviews can be in person or by telephone. Telephone much less expensive, but subjects must have phones and be able to hear and converse clearly for extended periods.

In-person interviews allow direct observation, examination

ADVANTAGES OF INTERVIEW
Very good technique for getting the information about the complex, emotionally laden subjects. Can be easily adapted to the ability of the person being interviewed. Yields a good percentage of returns. Yields perfect sample of the general population. Data collected by this method is likely to be more correct compared to the other methods that are used for the data collection.

DISADVANTAGES
Time consuming process. Involves high cost. Requires highly skilled interviewer. Requires more energy. May sometimes involve systematic errors. More confusing and a very complicated method

Questionnaire
A questionnaire is a list of the questions sent to a number of persons to answer. It secures the standardized results that can be tabulated and also treated statistically. A questionnaire consists of a variety of the questions printed or typed in a definite order on a form which are mailed further to the respondents OBJECTIVE:

To collect data from the respondents, who are generally scattered in a vast diverse area.

TYPES OF QUESTIONNAIRE
Questions are designed as either
Open-ended
Try to anticipate the response you will get Well suited for getting opinions Useful in explanatory situations

Closed
Use when all the options may be listed When the options are mutually exclusive

METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
Paper and pencil Cost effective, but low response rate Web / E-mail based Cost effective, higher response rate, some suspicion of the medium

Combination Can be administratively cumbersome

ADVANTAGES
Requires less skill. Less training is needed. Cheaper in nature. Also impersonal in nature. Pressure is less. Anonymity.

DISADVANTAGES
Returns are low if compared to the other methods used for the collection of the data. Response is also less. Less flexible in working. Occurrence of errors. Less reliable. Sometimes answers obtained can be wrong. Not efficient in the depth problems.
