What is OS?
An operating system (OS) is software, consisting of

programs and data, that runs on computers, manages computer hardware resources, and provides common services for execution of various application software. Without an operating system, a user cannot run an application program on their computer, unless the application program is self-booting. Examples of popular modern operating systems include Linux, Android, iOS, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

History of OS:
Alan Turing was a master of this on the early

Manchester Mark 1 machine, and he was already deriving the primitive conception of an operating system from the principles of the Universal Turing machine. In the early 1950s, a computer could execute only one program at a time. Each user had sole use of the computer for a limited period of time and would arrive at a scheduled time with program and data on punched paper cards and/or punched tape.

DIGRAMATIC EXPLANATION:

FEATURES OF OS:
Process management
Interrupts Memory management

File system
Device drivers Networking (TCP/IP, UDP) Security (Process/Memory protection) I/O

TYPES OF OS:
REAL-TIME OS(Ex.OS 9,RTLinux)
SINGLE USER & MULTI USER(Ex.windows vs unix) SINGLE TASKING & MULTI TASKING(Ex. DOS,Palm

OS Vs WS95,unix) DISTRIBUTED(Ex. OLTP) EMBEDED(Ex.WS ce,Minix 3,android) MULTI PROGRAMMING ***Multi tasking is divided in to Pre_emptive & Cooperative.

CUI V/S GUI

CUI stands for character user interface, ,it means that

u have to type commands to interact with ur computer and it is not so user friendly. e.g. - In DOS for every thing we type the commands.
GUI stands for Graphical User Interface,it means that

u no need to type commands to interact with ur computer instead u have to click with the help of mouse on the icons of readymade commands and it is user friendly. e.g. Windows

MAJOR FUNCTION OF OS:

resource management,
data management, job (task) management, and

standard means of communication between user and

computer.

MINOR FUNCTIONS OF OS:

Executing application programs.
Formatting floppy diskettes. Setting up directories to organize your files.

Displaying a list of files stored on a particular disk.

Verifying that there is enough room on a disk to save a

file. Protecting and backing up your files by copying them to other disks for safekeeping.

Charecterestics of OS:
