Chip recovery Abrasive recovery and reuse

ADVANTAGES OF AWJM
AWJM process maintains tight tolerances and

produces parts quickly. AWJM produces no heat affected zone. Clean edges are produce. Up to 40 plies can be cut. Computer controlled. Generates no dust.

DISADVANTAGES OF AWJM
Slight moisture pick up can takes place. Abrasives cannot be reused. Material removal rate is very low.

PARAMETERS AFFECTING CUTTING PERFORAMANCE OF THE AWJM

Waterjet nozzle diameter. Supply pressure. Abrasive parameters. Abrasive material. Stand off distance. Impingement angle. Depth of cut.

CONCLUSION
Abrasive Water jet Machining has led to water jets cold-

cutting and unidirectional (not sensitive to the cutting direction) capabilities that have made it especially well suited to meet the challenges associated with cutting unusual shapes of exotic and heat-sensitive materials. Many machine components formerly made with conventional machining techniques now can be made more easily and cost effectively with this technique. The industry enjoys a reduction in replacement tooling costs, because more precision cutting is shifted to the water jet and less is being cut with the carbide cutting tools, the tooling experiences less wear. Water jets are suitable for cutting high-strength materials into intricate shapes because relatively high cutting rates can be achieved. The same water jet tool can be used on a variety of these materials simply by changing the cutting rate. Thus this process can be widely used for fabrication of a large variety of components cost effectively and efficiently.
