The

term morphology comes from classical Greek (morph) and means the study of shape or form

Morphological Analysis

works through very simple processes, using two common principles of creativity: decomposition and forced association The problem is broken down into component variables and possible values identified for each. The association principle is then brought into play by banging together multiple combinations of these values.

Morphological

analysis is a proven ideation method that leads to "organized invention." The technique allows for two key elements: Its a systematic analysis Invention of new alternatives.

The first to use it was J.W. von Goethe(17491832), It was introduced to denote the principle of formation and transformation of organic bodies Swiss astronomer ERITZ ZWICKY in 1948 used it in a more generalised form. He used it in the field of ASTROPHYSICS and ROCKET RESEARCH From the late 1960s to the early 1990s, a limited form of MA was employed by a number of engineers, operational researchers and policy analysts.

MORE

THAN 100 PROJECTS HAVE BEEN CARIED OUT USING COMPUTER AIDED MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS IT HAS BEEN USED IN STRUCTURING: COMPLEX POLICY PLANNING POLICY SCENARIO DEVELOPMENT ANALYSING ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE etc.

This method breaks down a system, product or process into its essential sub-concepts. each concept represents a dimension in a multidimensional matrix. New ideas are found by searching the matrix for new combination of attributes that do not yet exist. It doesnt provide any specific guidelines for combining the parameters.

developing scenarios and scenario modeling laboratories; developing strategy alternatives; analyzing risks; relating means and ends in complex policy spaces; developing models for positional or stakeholder analysis; evaluating organizational structures for different tasks; presenting highly complex relationships in the form of comprehensible, visual models.

Morphological

analysis provides key insights on new research directions. Morphological analysis can provide a multitude of combinations and permutations not yet explored. This technique allow for a systematic analysis of the current and future structure of an industry (or system) and identification of key gaps.

An

overabundance of possibilities. Morphological analysis may yield too many possibilities.Human judgments are still needed to direct the outcome. Human error. The development of morphological boxes requires critical judgments. If the underlying thought processes are not insightful, the outcomes of these methods will be weak

PROBLEMS

AT HAND IS STUDIED DIMENSIONS OF THE PROBLEMS ARE LISTED Identification and characterization of all parameters toward a solution; THEN WE GENERATE A LIST OF ATTRIBUTES UNDER EACH DIMENSIONS THEN WE CONSTRUCT A MULTIDIMENSIONAL MATRIX (morphological box) WHOSE COMBINATIONS WILL CONTAIN ALL POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

COMBINATIONS

OF ALL ATTRIBUTES ACROSS THE DIMENSIONS ARE EXAMINED ( EVEN IF THEY APPEAR UNUSUAL OR IMPRACTICAL) Evaluation of the outcome is done which is based on feasibility and achievement of desired goals Then in-depth analysis of best possibilities considering available resources is done .

In Morphological Field we put all the conditions and there parameters in box in a organised way

THESE PARAMETERS INTO CONSIDERATION WE DEFINE VARIOUS CONTIONS UNDER WHICH THESE PARAMETERS CAN EXIST. THESE CONDITIONS CAN BE WILD OR ILLOGICAL . WE SIMPLY TAKE ALL THAT INTO CONSIDERATION FOR THE TIME BEING

DEVELOPMENT

OF NEW RESIDENCIAL AREAS DEVELOPMENT OF NEW INDUSTRIAL AREAS IMPLEMENTATION OF GOVT. POLICIES IN A PARTICULAR GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS ETC.

For example, the McDonnell Douglas corporation under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration employed morphological analysis in an astronomy planning study. The technique was used to explore three dimensions: astronomical bodies; portions of the electromagnetic spectrum; and particular parameters of interest, such as angular resolution. The following matrix was developed with each cell representing a potential series of measurements. EXAMPLE OF A MORPHOLOGICAL BOX
