TTCS Box design

Mechanical design team is reinforced by Corrado Gargiulo (INFN) for box design SYSU will perform detailed analyses on box and component (accumulator) design

Progress
Bolt sharing with a.o. main radiator bracket solved New draft mechanical box design available detailing on-going

Components interfaces 90% finalised (see

components) Preliminary stress analyses (SYSU) show sufficient margin

TTCS Start-up
Actions to tackle start-up problem decided on TWG meeting at NLR
Investigate possible super-critical pump start-up (PDT/NLR/CAST) Start-up analyses of orbital cases (SYSU/CGS)
Start-up radiator design decisions Investigation of severity of the problem (b-angles)

12

Tracker Thermal Control System

Super-critical start-up
PDT pump tests are being performed right now
Pressure head measurements suction capability with air or vapour Design is based on the MER-rover pump which has

been tested for 24 hour with closed valves

(circumstantial evidence)

Accumulator transition tests from super- to subcritical state will be implemented in EM testing to

verify wetting of the wick after super-critical startup

TTCS Start-up Modelling

Start-up analyses have been performed & reported

by SYSU/CGS
Assumptions:
Hot and coldest case orbital data selection by JS. AMS start-up configuration New box lay-out with start-up radiator
start-up radiator white-painted side walls covered by MLI

TTCS Start-up summary and remarks

Start-up radiator improves the TTCS start-up

capabilities
No freezing problem is present in the box with the start-up radiator Always one TTCS-loop able to start-up in AMS startup configuration Additional analyses required for start-up in AMS-on configuration

Supercritical start-up is investigated. If possible it

is detrimental for pump lifetime (however a system operational decision and option) and makes switch between P and S at all times possible

Component Status
Pump (PDT)
Design Review at PDT
Electronically pump design is progressing well Motor design mature (proven design) BBM curve test performed
pump can deliver more flow then required

Impeller adaptations are being implemented to have better control

Hall effect sensor issue solved (no Pressure dependence)

Super-critical start-up testing on-going Planning EM delivery early December 2005

FM inner rings ready

FM outer ring in manufacturing Condenser (NLR/UNIG) Condenser design is freeze proof
Condenser tubing resistant for MDP of 3000 bar at 5 C Low-T resistant thermostats are available

However transport tubing on conical flange can reach T<-55 C (freezing) after 160 hours

Component status
Condenser safety conclusion (TWG meeting at NLR)
Transport tubing have to show leak before burst
approval required from safety panel

Advantage is that the condenser manifolds can go back to the old upper trunnion bridge locations with shorter (lower pressure drop) condenser lines
