Overview
Location

based Services offer many advantages to the mobile users. In this era we are dealing with palmtops and iPhones, instead of desktops even for computational purposes. With the help of A-GPS in phones and through Web Services using GPRS, LBS can be implemented on Android based smart phones . We must ensure that a person when visiting places all the information must be available in his mobile device and also in user customized format.

Introduction
Android

OS is free to use, improvable, and designed with multiple hardware implementations. Android is builded on existing technologies like Linux and applying them to the mobile device. GPS, a process used to establish a position at any point on the globe The GPS satellites act as reference points from which receivers on the ground detect their position.

Introduction contd..
LBS refer to a set of applications that exploit the knowledge of the geographical position of a mobile device in order to provide services. LBS will provide services such as providing routing information, helping the users to find nearby shopping malls. For the mobile user, the examples of location based services are

To determine the nearest business or service Receiving alerts Friend finder

Introduction contd..

To discover the position of the mobile, LBS must use positioning methods in real time. accuracy of the methodology depends on the

approach used Locations either spatial terms or as text descriptions

The

location of the device can be retrieved by Mobile

Assisted GPS, also known as A-GPS or AGPS, improves the performance of standard GPS in devices connected to the wireless network

AGPS Architecture

A-GPS

enhances the location granularity of cell

phones in two ways

By helping in finding a faster "time to first fix" (TTFF). By helping position mobile device when GPS signals are not strong or not present.

ANDROID ADVANTAGE & LIMITATIONS

Advantages

Android scales to every device. Its supported by some hardware manufacturers and more to come in the future. Open source. Third party development is encouraged. Not supported by any big company yet except HTC Does not support some applications like Firefox Some limitations exist in blue tooth.

Limitations

FUTURE SCOPE
we

can also develop application that can tackle

following issues:

Location positioning Technologies Query processing Cache management

Applications

can be developed on Android

platform of Open Handset Alliance led by Google.

CONCLUSION
Initially

mobile phones were developed only for voice communication but now days the scenario has changed There are other aspects which are major focus of interest.

web browser and GPS services

The

LBS application can help user to find school, hospitals , gas filling station or any other facility of interest indicated by user within certain range
