Media influence on Early Adolescent Sexuality

What influence do you think these media messages have on adolescent development?

What developmental theories explain the influence of these messages?

One theory suggests that early adolescents go thru Piagets stages of development. 1. Accomodations 2. Assimilation

Vygotskys developmental theory suggests that adolescents are torn between self-image, learning the outside world, and being socially accepted by others.

Developmental Theories Influence


Piagets theory of accomodation suggests that just because media identifies and idea or projects the idea, that it is actually the right one. How adolescents think about themselves, their peers, ideas, or events are greatly influenced through media.

Assimilation fits into with middle school children because they tend to fit into peer groups that they see desirable. Parents often do not approve of the peer groups because they feel that it has a negative influence over their child. Peers may have such effects as: Self-image Educational goals Morals and values

What are the potential ethical issues in media targeted for adolescents? How would you deal with these in the classroom?

As a teacher, how would you address negative media influences or incorporate positive media and its influences into the classroom?

By counteracting the negative media influences. By having an open discussions with the adolescents about the negative media depictions and influences. By emphasizing the effects of having a baby while being an adolescent. By limiting the exposure of negative media influences the adolescent might have access to. By letting the adolescents parents know about the negative media influences that there adolescents my be viewing. By incorporating positive media portrayals that influence things such as education, spirituality and health.

How Teachers Can Address The Negative Media Influence on Early Adolescent Sexuality

By emphasizing the effects of having a baby while being an adolescent. By making the adolescents aware of the sexually transmitted diseases such as aids, Chlamydia, herpes, syphilis, and gonorrhea. By emphasizing the effects of having a baby while being an adolescent. By allowing adolescents to view media advocacy that promote the importance of sex education. By stressing the importance of abstinence.
