Two main types of diabetes


Type 1 diabetes - treated with insulin (and diet and physical activity) - normally diagnosed under 40 years old Type 2 diabetes - treated with diet and physical activity plus sometimes tablets and/or insulin too - normally diagnosed over age of 40

Facts and Figures


Over 2.8 million people diagnosed in the UK. As for the undiagnosed, that figure is now estimated as being up to 850 thousand Around 9 billion a year spent on treating diabetes and its complications by the NHS.

What causes Type 1 diabetes?


Nobody knows why the cells that produce insulin are damaged Likely cause is the body having an abnormal reaction Maybe triggered by a viral or other infection You are more at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes if it runs in your family

Over the age of 40 for white people Over the age of 25 for black and Asian people plus. A family history Being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle Having a large waist measurement Circulation problems & treated high
