KEY SCENE BREAKDOWN

Opening
This is the introduction to Mr. Porters workshop and also therefore the introduction to the dolls. We wanted to focus on the angelic villains first and set an eerie atmosphere for our protagonist to walk into to. This sets up the audience feeling uncomfortable as a high fear amongst young adults and older, are dolls. Theres something about a painted on smile, rosy cheeks and glazed over eyes that create a presence of being watched therefore we decided that we shall exploit this using low angle shots, creating power. We also used movement on mundane tools into a doll standing next to it, this makes it seem like there are dolls lurking everywhere.

Mr. Porters entrance

This is the introduction to our main character and therefore there has to be a long sequence showing his style and characteristics. There is a combination of long shots, close ups and mid-shots this connotes his unpredictable personality and personal life. This contrasts to the previous scene (opening) where there is ambient noise instead of soundtrack and various quicker shots instead of master shots or slow panning this is because the action is quicker and realistic.

Cutting up the Doll

This scene shows an insight into Mr. porters personality and his cruel way of treating women. Initially his pliers go into her eye and then divert to her ear, this represents the way he victimises women through attracting them with various goods and then manipulating them with words. When he puts the doll down, the focal point changes to this doll and he is out of focus whereas she is at the forefront. This connotes the power shift and the start to things going wrong for Mr. Porter. This a moment when an element of closeness makes the audience fear for the main character as it seems obvious something is about to happen to him.

Washing his Wound

This encourages the audience that he is real therefore something potentially harmful could happen and the dripping blood connotes the losing energy/power that he had. There is also a focus on the blood in the sink, the camera even pans in. This is because there is a lot of blood suggesting to the audience that he might be delirious or that the dolls have somehow manipulated him. This is up to the audience to decide, in a way they are choosing his fate as real or delusion.

Building Suspense/Ending
This building of tension is important to our production as it is the climax of the film. We use a variety of shots with quick cuts between edits to make it more hectic and as if the audiences eyes are diverting round the room. Towards the end we use a lot of POV shots to draw the audience into the situation. We end the film with the light being switched off, this enigma code works well here as we want the audience to want more and know what happened to Mr. Porter.
